I've had black bean brownies. They're... ok.

Apparently you can make brownies out of black beans and dates and a bunch of cocoa powder that are indistinguishable from regular ol' brownies.

My mind has been blown.

I must admit, it *is* very shocking that the thing with a bunch of chocolate in it tastes like chocolate.

Yeah, that cocoa powder really creates a moist, cake/cookie-like texture.

That both James Gurney (creator of Dinotopia) and Thomas Kincade (notorious "Homey art prints" artist) both worked on Ralph Bakshi & Frank Frazetta's Fire & Ice.

Yeah, after Kinkade's death, Ralph Bakshi wrote a piece on his work on the film. He tries to (unconvincingly) sell Kinkade as a counter-culture spy making fun of the people buying his paintings. He also shows off some of Kinkade's backgrounds on the film, which look good, although you can clearly see Kinkade's style in utero there. Who knows, if he hadn't gone to Jesus he probably would have been doing prints at sci-fi conventions of alien landscapes or Boris Vallejo style pinups.

Fun fact: I couldn't remember Boris Vallejo off the top of my head for that last post, so I did a search for "Dinosaurs" (the last thing that I remember ever seeing a Boris Vallejo image on) which led me to this familiar image:

After that, I just typed in a search for "90s fantasy painter" and Vallejo was the first name that popped up.

Boris Vallejo is one of my favourite "joke people", largely because of Hyborian Gates:

But also because really, even when not making magnificent catastrophes in game form, the dude could not resist doing art like that anyway. Severely 80's-coiffed women riding chrome animals was actually a very common theme of his clearly a fetish of his.

If you look at Vallejo's stuff from the late '70s to the early '80s, you may notice a recurring model or two.

That woman appears in many of his works from that period, often nude. I've never learned her name.

The man is the artist himself. He also appears in many of his paintings, but never nude. I wonder why.

Might be Julie Bell, she worked with him a lot.

Could also be a relative. Frank Frazetta used his daughters as a model a lot (which does have this sort of unfortunately creepy pedo vibe to it, even though I've never heard any accounts of his actually doing anything and his daughters seem to have been on better terms with him than his sons).

I doubt it was Julie, they didn't meet until the '90s and she's got a totally different face structure.

It might have been his first wife, Doris.

I love how it's actually entirely outside any real mathematics... Just wait to see if the earth goes haywire and then manually add them. :scanners:

I was at a card and comic book show when I was a teenager and Hyborean Gates boxes were on sale for 4 dollars a booster box. Also, Wyvern the Collectable Card Game.

I am sad to say the only two games I have ever had a complete set of were Hyborean Gates and Wyvern.

Words really cannot express how fucking bad Hyborean Gates was. Not just the art, but the gameplay mechanics. The booster packs would come with little cards that had cut-out things you'd assemble into little papercraft markers to put on cards. The rules were completely incomprehensible. I spent hours reading that little manual that came iwth the starter decks and was NEVER able to figure it out.

Wyvern on the other hand was honestly pretty good, but nobody played it and the art was miserable.

Did you get any Fallen Empire cards in any Wyvern packs?

That there is an honest-to-god real person, born well over a decade before the release of a certain movie, named Snake Plissken.
