Today I learned about Julie D'Aubigney, "a 17th-century bisexual French opera singer and fencing master who killed or wounded at least ten men in life-or-death duels, performed nightly shows on the biggest and most highly-respected opera stage in the world, and once took the Holy Orders just so that she could sneak into a convent and bang a nun."

She also fell in love with Fanchon Moreau, another singer who was the mistress of the Great Dauphin, and tried to commit suicide when she was rejected.

Even Friday can't compete with a dolphin.

Not so much something I learned, but more like something I may have figured out.

Whenever I'm dreaming and I'm myself and I'm doing things, I usually dream that I'm also naked. This morning I realized that when I'm naked dreaming I'm also very aware of my junk. Then it occurred to me that the reason I'm naked in my dreams is BECAUSE I'm aware of my junk, and that being aware of my junk inspires feelings of vulnerability and of being naked.

That's when I realized that when people dream about being naked at school or at work, what's actually happening is that their proprioception is interfering with their dreams. There's no symbolism, no Freudian purpose or arm chair psychology -- your brain merely registers the existence of your genitals.

And what's weird is that it seems like that I'm the first person to actually figure this out. Admittedly, I'm not doing much more than scanning Google and Wikipedia, but nevertheless this seems like a pretty solid hypothesis as to why this happens.

Maybe you could do some sort of a study that made it clear that people are more aware of their surroundings while sleeping than they think and get some modest accolades from the "field".

Actually, there might be grant money in this if you suggest that this avenue of research will lead us to making the most of our sleeping time.

Kinda hard to chicken/egg it, though.  Are you dreaming you're naked because you're suddenly very aware of your genitals, or are you suddenly very aware of your genitals because you're dreaming of people staring at them while you're naked?

I can't even begin to imagine how you'd draw any measurable distinction between the two.

The Charley Horse is named for Charles "Hoss" Radbourn, a baseball player from the 1880's who is famous for being the only pitcher to win 60 games in one season in MLB history and also being the first (and second!) man to ever flip a camera the bird.

That Robert Downey Jr, Stephen Fry, Carrie Fisher, Axl Rose, Ted Turner, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Frank Sinatra, Isaac Newton (maybe), Frederich Nietzsche (maybe), and Edgar Allen Poe (maybe) all have/had Bi-Polar Disorder.

In some mathematical equation, this makes me Iron Man.

That Kevin Sorbo is apparently some ageless titan of myth.  Seriously, this was taken in February.  He's 55 in that photo.

Perhaps you mean he's 2255 in that photo. But really, he doesn't look a day over 1000.

Chainmail was popular in mediaeval times, even though it was only effective against slashing and not crushing weapons, because of how difficult it was to treat infected wounds. This made a cut more deadly than a broken bone.

Also, there's not really any armor that's really that effective against a crushing weapon.

Well, armor will still spread the force of that impact and absorb some small amount of energy being deformed... But...
