I learned that Ex-girlfriends do indeed, not change, and that all associated baggage they had when you were with them, is still there even if you're not dating.  ::(:

SMBC is making the author some serious dough.

According to Project Wonderful, SMBC brings in about half a million pageviews per day. Right now he's making about $50 per day from two ads, and even if that slips a little he's still taking in over US$15,000/day.

The crazy thing is, that works out to 10 cents or less per thousand pageviews. Even my old abandoned Google Ads pull in more than that.

Then I noticed he's also running two Doubleclick ads on that page. He must be making at least thirty cents per thousand on those. Even at a third of that and accounting for server costs, SMBC must be making a respectable salary on his webcomic.

Not only is Old Yeller Dog Food real, it's been around since 2005.  That is some staying power for a dog food based upon killing a rabid dog.

They put it out without a hint of irony.

Old Yeller himself is displayed prominently on the packaging.

Holy Jesus flipping fuck on a stick.

The issue of Old Yeller dog food is two fold.

1) The movie thematically may be about compassion and love or whatever, but it still ends with a boy having to shoot his rabid dog.  That's probably the last thing I want to think of when I get food for my beloved pet: that he might become diseased and I'd have to put him down.  Disney has tons of other popular dog films that have happier endings that it could license.  Which brings up point two,

2) Why does a dog food need licensing?  The dog doesn't care what brand you get, as long as he can eat it.  It's one of those things that's never really needed a big movie tie-in to sell.  What other products could we merchandise this way?  Godfather Spaghetti, Fast and Furious Tires, Larry the Cable Guy in Delta Farce Pepper Spray?  Okay, that last one might appeal to Larry the Cable Guy's demographic.

Really, it's just a weird marketing decision.  Almost like the suits at Disney decided they had to franchise something and really wanted to break in to the lucrative dog food market at the same time.  And thus, a new brand is born.

The problem with point 2 is that the dog isn't buying his own damn food. So you still have to sell the thing to people, hence marketing. Still doesn't explain the stupid decision of using old yeller though.

Well, I was operating on a similar principle to kid's food.  Kids don't buy McDonald's, but they do want it.  Dogs could care less what you put in front of them.

Ah, I suppose that is a good point. I think it'd be pretty funny if old yeller dog food was some kind of discount dog food at least.

Well, at the Kroger I shop at it sits at the end of the aisle in a heap, doesn't even get put on the shelves.  It's like $13 a bag, though.

It's a glass half full thing.  People like Guild (*cough*) associate the movie with the joy of owning a dog, and then some people associate it with its goddam ending.

And some people have one or two reasons to get kind of upset about being reminded of that sort of thing, and don't appreciate it being used in marketing.  It's like the Geico cavemen of dehydrated horse pellets.

We read the book in 5th grade and had an assignment to draw a cover for it.  One kid drew the main character (was his name Jim?) saying "Here Yeller!" while holding a shotgun behind his back.  The teacher made him do a new one.

Putting together rows of on-point squares in a quilt is a pain in my fucking ass.  That's what I learned.

You can say what you want about Old Yeller and how you don't want to be reminded of the painful parts of the movie, but for me, pain is a beautiful thing to be relished*. The pain counterpoints the emotion the boy felt for the dog. If he hadn't had to lose him we, the audience, would not have understood how much he loved him, and none of you would have been so impacted by the story that marketing to DOG OWNERS (you are silly constantine) with Old Yeller Dog Food would be effective.

*It's weird but true. That's not to say I go out of my way to experience pain, except when I know it's pretend, like in movies.

Oh, hey, wasabi in here.

Oh, I see.

Well, olive you know what's coming next, of course.  I'm going to write a big long post, peppered gingerly with oil the puns I can think of, leaving you with no choice but Tobasco over my horribleness, 'cause I'm a huge dilldo.  Mayonnaise a creature of habit, after all, or so sauce Freud.

...hmm.  Well that's salt that I could come up with right now.  Maybe it's time to turn in my title as the Grandpoppy of Pun Rants.
