"if you spend more money, you're better!"

This is why I thought ante was a good idea. And according to the ancient Pocket Player's Guide, it was intended to be a way to balance out big spenders.

But they didn't want Magic to be a form of gambling...

EDIT: They also intended rares to be cards that just had unusual properties not really intended to stack your deck full of (i.e. Lich, Personal Incarnation, Jade Monolith). That policy died faster than Banding...

I guess they're kiiiiind of going back to that now with the introduction of mythic rares. Over the past few sets, due to issues with printing, Magic's rare cards have had an enormous range of statistical likelihood of acquisition per booster.  They're going to keep printing useful utility automatic four-of rares, but now they're also printing 'mythic' rares which are primarily legends and other high-cost high-impact Timmy cards.  In practice, thanks to their small number and small overall set size, any given mythic rare should only be half as likely per booster as a typical rare, which will appear at the high-end of the "likely to open" scale they've been operating on.

The more you pay the better you are concept is widely overblown in most gaming. I've won major tournaments with borrowed decks, 20 dollar decks, etc, and this isn't because I'm some amazing god of gaming. How you build your deck and how you play it is far more important than what cards you have 90% of the time. There is a base buy in to build a competitive deck that ranges from 50 to 400 dollars depending on them game, and you usually have to re-buy every so often when your deck shifts out of legality, but it's no more expensive that video-gaming or even wow usually.

I can't count the number of times the boss handed me a deck he made and asked commanded me to sit in to fill out a tournament.  Bleeeeeeuuuugggh... And it was for DUEL MASTERS.

And they said they designed the mythic rare cards to not be four-of utility cards or bombs.

This is from the design team that intended Tarmogoyf as a joke card.

I'm getting nightmares about the PKO Magic set I crafted mainly with the help of Cait and some input from Zaratustra.  Stop it.

(This artifact is hilarious! It should be well balanced in our set, no obvious flaws...  Cait proceeds to shoot me to death with the Master Sword.)

I remember that.  Someone (I think it was you) destroyed me with a combo that involved Brentai and endless 1/1 Schoolgirl tokens.

...Doncha love it, BRENTAI?  ::D:

I still think Brent was hardcore broken in the format, but I forget if Cait was the one who backed it as 'It's fine.'

I don't even remember the thing, but I vaguely remember looking at my card and thinking it was kinda ridiculous.  But I sort of assumed you guys didn't intend it to be played.

Also, it had my Chibi Locke avatar, right?  I totally want that thing back.

All the card art was lost.  Except 4chan really seems to like the Kool-Aid man we came up with.

I can confirm that. Many (if not most) purely competitive players work in informal teams (which also function as a think tank and test-mill), pool cards, and don't care what edition they're playing, so long as they have enough to play in the tournament.

I played Magic for about three years seriously, and I dropped a lot of money on it I wish I could get back now. Except, well, through trading, I actually made a lot of money. Hell, I sold a unlimited Lotus at a tourney once for two hundred bucks.

Anyway, I don't have much to add except that I've seen my share of complete ass clowns, but I've also seen my share of actually cool guys (and a few girls) at tournaments. I'm discounting the 13 year olds who played, because they're not people.

I played to win, and I had fun doing it. Despite what most of you apparently believe, it is possible to play to win and not be a fuckstick. Even if you do have a fairly expensive deck. Which I did. Did I lose to a cheap deck once in a while? Sure. Did that make me nerd rage and throw a hissy fit? Nope. If my ensnaring bridge control/burn deck loses because some guy is running Frozen Shade (what) then so be it.

Nerds are people. People run the gambit between awesome and complete wastes of life. Saying that all nerds who play magic are fucking gay is flawed. Saying the majority who play are fucking gay may be correct. I don't have hard fucking statistics to back up what I'm saying here. But I would hesitate to believe it.

I hope that was a long time ago, because those are worth a Grand now.

Yeah, it was. I would kick myself over selling it, but I bought another one about a month later for 150, so.

I actually hate trading with a violent passion. Haggling and all the other mind game shit that goes with it is anathema to me.
