Donna Summer

Geez, the musicians lately.

Only going to accelerate, I suppose.

Not just the musicians, but "Filipino comics artist" seems an oddly specific category.

Ernie Chan, just a week after Tony DeZuniga.

I blame Mark Evanier, whose latest blog post ended with:

Quote
I will be back in a day or three when things calm down...or when I have to post a sudden obit, whichever occurs first.

So I think we can safely say that whatever it is that's taken Mark off the grid, it somehow involves the covert assassination of Ernie Chan.

WHAT DID HE EVER DO TO YOU, MARK?  WHAT DID HE EVER DO TO YOU?

EDIT: Joking aside, the sudden obit in question is now up.

And more musicians. Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees just went. I think he'd recently slipped into a coma and had been suffering from multiple forms of severe cancer, so not exactly a surprise. But still... :/

I think the only thing we can do is get Shadow Moses back up and play a few rounds of lolcano tonight in memory.

Last I checked, like last week, ShMo hadn't been updated to the most recent version of TF2.

I only update the thing when people remind me to do it since no one plays on it anyways.

Edit: it is now updated.

Static co-writer Robert L. Washington III passes away, after multiple heart attacks at 47.

I read stuff like this and...man.  The comics industry is fucked up.

Would sure be nice if we lived in a world where we didn't NEED the Hero Initiative.

(Good thing we solved all the problems with creators not getting compensated "decades ago", huh Scott Kurtz?)

A shame.  NPR had a good obit that linked back to a recent interview.  King seems like, essentially, a Regular Guy who had some problems, suffered a wildly disproportionate punishment for them, and used his second chance to be a better person and to set a good example.

Quote
There are some interesting revelations. For one thing, King says his famous "Can we get along" speech was completely impromptu; his lawyers had drafted a far angrier script for him, but he refused to use it.

"I couldn't see putting any more heat on the fire, you know?" he says, while sitting in a small park near the site of the speech. "That's not the way I was raised."

[...]

"People were mad at me because they didn't think I was going to say, 'Can we all get along?' " King says. "I had people come up to me and say, 'What the fuck did you say that for?!' "

He believes they wanted him to validate the riots' violence, something he resolutely refused to do.

There was another quote on the radio but I can't find it at the moment -- something to the effect that he's okay with "Can we all get along?" being a punchline, that when people use it in jest they're acknowledging their own foibles and, usually, implying that whatever disagreement they're currently having isn't worth fighting over.

Sorry to have lost him.

And this time of year, it's a reminder that even the best swimmer can drown.  Swim with a buddy.

Speaking of which, I just read the fourth news story in the past two weeks about someone, this time a 13-year-old kid from Houston, drowning in a pool. Be careful out there.

Caroline John, who played Liz Shaw.  (Was she really in only four serials?  Hell, I've seen three of them.)

That's Liz and Sarah Jane in just over a year.  Must be a little disquieting for Katy Manning about now.
