Warning - while you were typing...

Sad news. The Beastie Boys were great, he was young, and cancer is a shitty way to go.

It's rare that I hear an obit and actually say "Oh, shit" out loud.

Where the Wild Things Are was my favorite book when I was little.  It's the book I learned to read with.

My sister-in-law named her son Max.

I'm sure Sendak would be lovably cranky that all anyone is talking about is Where the Wild Things Are, because indeed he did a whole lot more.  But there's a reason that's the one everybody remembers.

And if anyone missed Colbert's interview with him from a few months ago, do yourself a favor and pull it up.  It's absolutely delightful.  Sendak remained sharp, cranky, foul-mouthed, and funny right up until the end.

I would if I could find it on a site that wasn't region-locked.

I think it was January 24th and 25th; I won't think less of you for looking for torrents.

Francois Mouly posts (husband) Art Spiegelman's strip about meeting Sendak.  Sendak says in the strip that he's 65 ("facing the big croak"), which means this is about 18 years ago.

And a third segment last night (May 8), of previously unaired footage.

Tony DeZuniga.

His family's still got hospital bills to deal with; MTV posted a link to donate.

And, on a related note, there are plenty of other creators who could still use some help through the Hero Initiative.

Caroll Shelby

::(:

It's funny, Caroll Shelby's design abilities were always extremely respected in the industry, but until the 90s his works weren't much valued by anyone but the extreme gearheads. At one point, Shelby was selling the Cobras from his racing team for 10 or 20,000 a piece to try to pull together enough funds to build one or two more race cars. Now, 20 or 30 years later, those same cars are going for millions of dollars at auction. Shelby was like many great artists, except instead of painting pictures with a brush or composing great orchestral music or enchanting us with a sweet and soulful voice, Shelby worked with physics, math, and machinery. That his works were as aesthetically pleasing as they are functional is a testament to the natural beauty of aerodynamics.

May sound odd, but I hope Top Gear (Proper UK version) does a tribute. Shelby was an absolute force in the automotive and racing worlds. Dethroning the mighty Ferarri, etc. They did a fantastic tribute to the driver Ayrton Senna a couple of years ago, and I'd love them to do something on how important Shelby was to everything that has an engine and goes fast.
