DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD:

Background: The first VHS movie I ever bought, one of the very first purchases I ever made online, and the only VHS movie I still own is Black Belt Jones, the world's first, greatest, and probably only Blaxploitation/Chop-Socky crossover flick.

I also had it transferred to DVD, as it has never received a DVD release of any quality whatsoever (I'm not actually sure if it even ever had an official DVD release).

For god's sake, I even bought the super low-budget Hong Kong-made sequel (which is more of just a straight chop-socky film, only it sort of happens to star a black guy).

19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, fighting the Yarnell Fire.

I didn't know any of them, but I guess my brother went to high school with 3 of them.

Fuck, man.

...and now I awkwardly try to play off the misery with something lighter.

probably only Blaxploitation/Chop-Socky crossover flick.

Oh, not the only one.

Alex Colville. For you non-canuckleheads, he was probably the most famous non-Group Of Seven painter in our country.

Hadn't even heard Helen Thomas died; just found out via Monday night's Moment of Zen.

She said some unpleasant things near the end there, and it would be wrong to ignore that.  But she was also honest and fearless and that's how I prefer to think of her.  The Press Corps could sure as fuck use more like her.

Sam Simon -- who, along with Groening and Brooks, is one of the three people most responsible for the creation of The Simpsons -- is not dead yet but he has terminal cancer.

He has no children and has stated that he's going to spend his remaining months donating his money -- and his Simpsons royalties alone are worth tens of millions a year -- to charity.  Mostly animal rescue.

Michael Ansara.

He was a cool guy with a unique voice. If ever I made a animated film, I would have wanted him in the cast.

Marian McPartland, female jazz pianist and radio host. Had the pleasure of seeing her in concert quite a few years ago, very funny, still a pretty great player. Didn't realize she was 95.

Are we just not going to mention Elmore Leonard, then?

Not that anybody is going to shedding any tears, but Ariel Castro committed suicide while in jail.
