How to quickly supersede much of the common knowledge, and dive right back in.

Could have our new PC be something like Nicole, only mature enough and with companions enough to get a better handle on the character's powers of prophecy.

Could make a really neat balance between using prophecy, if it's limited by charges or a "D-Counter".

 I'm thinking of this too much like a game and not enough like a story, aren't I?

I wouldn't really mind switching to a new story if we got an epilogue that tied things up (or if the new story was a shift of POV in the same world).

Classic is still a bad poster with bad ideas..

Still not favoring any of the voting options, as fun as the story was, we'll only end up dead once again later on and then we'll be even more crushed; hell, we'd end up dead with a new character probably.

I really wouldn't mind a new story though.

I'm all in favor of hardcore death rules for roguelikes, tabletop RPGs, and the like.  The difference between those things and this is that in those things, my character never lurches toward suicide without my consent.  Voted mulligan.

my character never lurches toward suicide without my consent.

Hit by a confuse spell + in dire straights = exactly that.
:MENDOZAAAAA: I need to get better at roguelikes.
You know, after I figure out the school and living things.

 I guess if there's enough clamor for it, Friday could do both. It's not like her cool ideas for the setting are going to vanish. If she takes a break to do The End: Opposing Force.

I won't be as into a new version :(
I'm already invested in the cool characters we have now and won't feel like playing a different one.

I'm putting mine toward mulligan. Though I would also like to see a side story at some point. Though by the game-like nature of the thing there'd have to be a good reason for us to have so much inside knowledge. I like the proposed solution on that count, though I don't feel a lot of tension in a survival scenario with a competent protagonist with military training and knowledge of the enemy. To say nothing of just not relating too damn much with military types (most present company excluded).

I can't make a much more compelling argument than that I feel invested in the characters, and don't just want to know what's going on in the world, but what happens to them. And I don't think it would be robbing the thing of any gravity to get a takeback. Or even a couple, if it came to that. There are ways of fucking ourselves over beyond dying, after all. I think we did that more than once, and lived with it.

I am, however, sincerely surprised that nobody has suggested continuing the story after our fuckup. As in, we didn't die. Maybe we lost a limb, or our vinemonster regenerated us in a not-entirely-comfortable way. Anything like that. That'd provide a continuing sense of consequence, I think.

Figured life would turn out to more or less exactly Gibson without the razorgirls, space Jamaicans, and pretty much anything else that made it kind of cool.

... I am actually changing my vote. I tend to agree with sharkey, thinking on it the last couple days -- not a total mulligan, but... not total annihilation either. Something between.

Not least of all because waking up with a missing limb/somehow otherwise disabled is one of my all-time nightmare scenarios.

Ditto, but replace limb with eyes, teeth, nose, or ears.
So, yeah, the first chapter would be hard to top.

A mulligan can't just be "oh, we picked the other option REALLY".  Maybe David saves us as we're being torn apart, maybe Nicole unleashes PSYCHIC BLAST in the nick of time, maybe G-Man rescues us so we can take out the Combine, just something other than time travel.

I'd still feel bad because Friday made the decision to kill us, and we're clamoring to reverse that choice as if we deserve it.

I like Sharkey's idea of recovering consciousness in a critical state.  We don't know what happened.  We're too hurt to talk and our choices are limited to small, painful motions.

Fund it.

You see, I don't feel bad, because Friday's polling our opinions and pretending, graciously, that they matter to her.

If we're going to get a mulligan, it might as well be the full deal though, because no matter what it's Friday reneging on her text in a pretty major way. It's not like she's going to do something she doesn't think will be fun. So I'm going to clamor for whatever stupid idea I want at that minute.
