Oh Duck Hunt too.  I can't think of any other games..but I can name some movies that do kill dogs.  And that makes me dislike movies when I see these things happen.  Examples include: Dreamcatcher (scared me anyway), The Thing (I've never seen it but I know), American Psycho (maybe?), Snakes on a Plane, and other movies I can't think of.

I thought of an alternative regarding the nature of the infection. It amounts to roughly the same thing as the red-blue hypothesis, but the mechanics are somewhat different.

The Zerg Hypothesis
Everything is infected with the same strain of pathogen/parasite, just as the Zerg are all the same. However, different creatures are under the control of different remote "cerebrates" -- Benny, Noface, Nicole, The Red (Noface and/or Benny), or The Blue (probably Nicole). This control is not fixed; it may vary with distance from the different cerebrates, personal decisions of the infected creature, or some other factor. We were originally blue, but have been becoming progressively more red over time.

This would explain why we've been going particularly apeshit since being separated from Nicole. It also provides an explanation for Jesse's lack of red awareness -- she's currently blue, so she isn't privy to the "team chat".

theory: The more selfish we are, the faster the infection spreads (since the will of the worms seems directed towards self-protection). Of course, the more selfless we are, the faster we die.

But they're not the worst. The worst are the ones who still look like us. They come in, they pretend. They let the others in. I urge you: Trust nobody.

Right, so, about this. This seems to imply a qualitative difference between the lookalikes and infected who are just losing control. Coincidentally, us and Nicole are the only known ones who fit the "coherent but faceless" profile. Awkward times are ahead!

We were originally blue, but have been becoming progressively more red over time.
I'd disagree given that whole choice sequence, to use your terminology, was red/blue/human and we chose blue. Which implies we weren't initially. Given the "normal" faceless No Face can summon, I'd say the default is red.

Nicole's had demonstrated counter-infection abilities since that road trip to that place Benny died so that's not too odd.

We haven't drank any alcohol in a while and I think our infection is more 'advanced' considering the many droughts we've had, so that would explain why we're more integrated in the Faceless..network thing. Not to mention we have active Nicole/blue and whatever Benny is running around in our brain, which makes us incredibly unique considering the simple Faceless we've come across so far.

Jesse seems to have kept a regular dosage of alcohol and her infection is probably far less advanced and thus less integrated.

And why would Jesse be blue? She got her strain from her family, who are all dead due to murderous advanced infections. This contradicts Blue being relatively benign to humanity. She's just more human than us, that's all.

The whole cerebrate thing you suggested might be linked to the different craters. There seems to be another one near Limestone which might house different worms, which explains the sudden activeness of the blue strain Nicole activated. Still, No Face stills seems to be the leader given it keeps showing up everywhere.

This, of course, suggests we might want to move towards the crater to get some answers from the Blue worms, but that is also crazy and Jesse would never go along with it.

I think trying to keep our humanity through our choices is clear on several levels.  Merely having the will to not betray others out of convenience, or fear, shows strength of character and mind, which helps us keep our own self.

I'm just trying to say that choosing what's right rather than what's easy makes us human in every way possible.

This contradicts Blue being relatively benign to humanity.

I wouldn't assume Blue is relatively benign to humanity.

Nicole and the Blue have been caring towards us.  We're infected.  And if the other stuff adds up, the guy with the shotgun in his mouth may have been infected with the Blue.  It doesn't sound like they're necessarily super-friendly.

But it does seem that they're easier to communicate with.  At least so far.

Maybe we should actually try to speak to Newspaper Man if he shows up again.  (or maybe that's a really, really bad idea)

I Am Legend

I cannot express how much the dog's death in this movie both saddened and enraged me.

Think "ending of Chinatown" for reference.

Anyway, take with leads 10-2, so I'll update a bit early.

1. Take him with you.

"He looks half starved," you say. "We gotta find some food for him."

Jesse nods and strokes the top of Max's head, who winces a bit but accepts it. "That's not all we've got to find. So are we getting out of here, or what?"

"Yeah," you say, giving the room a final look. "Let's get out of here."

The two of you head out the door. Max watches you from inside the room, eyes shining.

"Come on, Max," you say, getting out another small bit of jerky. "We're leaving now."

The dog's eyes fix on the food in your hand, and he lets out a soft whine, then turns to Brian's body. He sniffs once, then whines again, and licks a dangling hand.

With that Max turns back to you, and trots purposefully out of the room. You feed him the jerky, which he swallows in one bite. You shut and lock the door. The darkness enfolds you again.

You flick the lighter on and head down the hall. As you pass room 33, Max growls and bristles, but quickly moves by.

"What kind of dog is he, anyway?" Jesse asks.

"He's a Border Collie, I think," you reply. Max from ahead makes a noise in his throat, like he agrees with you. "They're supposed to be the smartest dogs in the world, or so I've heard."

"Really?" Jesse asks. "So, like sheep herding dogs? Why would one be in the city?"

"My family had a Border Collie when I was a kid. They make good pets. His name was Rex, just like the one in Babe."

"Never seen it," Jesse says, glancing over her shoulder.

"You've never seen Babe?"

"Isn't it a kids movie?"

"Yeah, kind of."

You two fall silent. Max walks slightly ahead of you in the hallway, his four legs making less noise than either of your two. You come to the end of the hall and to the fire escape. Max looks back at you expectantly.

"Uhm. You told me about... your eyes," Jesse says as you begin to open the door.

"Yeah?"

"When you regrew your missing one... they were two different colors," she says.

"Still are."

"Well, what about Max's eyes?"

You grunt as the old door finally opens. "I don't know. It's actually somewhat common in Border Collies. Though usually you don't see it in the black and whites."

Jesse shifts as you turn off the lighter, gray light from outside pouring in through the open doorway. The fire escape is directly outside.

"You said you couldn't 'feel' him. What did you mean by that?"

"I'll tell you later," you say, stepping out onto the metal. Across from you, another building. Below is an alley. "This alley must be opposite the other one."

Jesse steps out next to you. Max seems reluctant, sniffing the metal grating suspiciously.

"Come on, Max. It's OK," you say. He gingerly steps out onto the escape, and looks up at you, puzzled.

"It's for getting out in case of a fire. I know. It's kind of weird, huh boy?" you say, petting his head. His tail wags a little, then stops.

You head down the first set of steps to the second floor. Jesse follows, coaxing Max along, who slips on the steps but manages to catch himself. There isn't any more steps; you'll have to lower the ladder to get down.

"Max will have to jump," you say, hefting the ladder so it can fall. It clatters downwards and you wince. "Oops."

Jesse holds out her hands. "Give me the shotgun. I'll hold it while you climb, toss it down to you."

You nod and hand it to her. Swinging your legs over, you start to climb down the metal rungs to the ground. Less than ten feet from the ground, the ladder ends, and you fall the the rest of the way.

Jesse drops down the shotgun heads down, her rifle slung over her shoulder and back as usual.

You watch as she descends.

nice view

Jesse finishes her climb and drops down. She lands next you and you help her up. "You alright?"

"Yeah, fine," she replies, brushing herself off.

The two of you look up at Max, who is pacing back and forth at the top of the ladder.

"Come on, Max! Jump!"

Max whines, looks down at you, whines again, then suddenly launches himself at you. You catch him and are knocked to the ground. Max scrambles away, limping slightly.

Jesse helps you up. "You OK?" she asks.

You shake your head. "Fine."

Max comes back around toward you, still limping a bit. He barks, once.

"Shh!" you put a finger to your lips. "You alright, Max?" Max's eyes fix on your finger, and he wags his tail once, back and forth.

"I guess you are," you say, patting his head. "No barking, OK?"

Max makes a noise in his throat. You scratch behind one ear. Max turns and trots away from you, the limp gone.

"So, what now?" Jesse asks.

***********************************

1. Take the alley back to main street, continue heading north.

2. Take the alley the other direction.

If the dog has any ideas, I'd follow him.  Dogs are so much more in tune to smart-moves-bad-moves than people are.  Although...................if he's secretly a cavine maybe that'd be really stupid.  Nevermind.

If you want to avoid walking down the alley, we should be closer to the other road than Main Street. When we went up the stairs, we saw a window on the opposite side of Main -- that is, we came to an exterior wall on the opposite side. This means that, unless the building stretches across the entire block, its front side should face an unknown street running parallel to Main.

...unless the building is actually on Main, there's a third alley running perpendicular to the other two behind it, and for some reason an architect decided that it'd be great to have a window overlooking the back of another building and a bunch of dumpsters.

Now that I think about it, for this building to face another street means that it shares a wall with whatever buildings are behind it on Main (since the wall in the alley was unbroken). This is common on the main street of older towns with single level stores, but it seems unlikely with buildings of this size.

Okay, diagramming floor three has clarified things.

Room 31 is in the corner of the building, where alley 1 and the other exterior wall meet. Fifteen feet before room 31 is a short hallway going to an elevator. Elevators are almost always near the front of a building. Therefore, the building faces an unknown street as originally thought. Going away from Main Street means less time spent in the alleyway.

Yeah, we need to stay the hell off the main road since it's big and where all the faceless seem to like to hang out.  Fuck that shit.

Remember that Wolfy's brown eye used to be Benny's, and it's the only case so far of an infected being able to regenerate. It's possible that Max got infected after his owner died and then starved to death, at which point he could have been regenerated in a similar way and picked up a new eye (probably his master's). But if he had been infected, he probably would have tendrilled out and eaten the corpse by now, and I don't think there's any reason to mistrust Wolfy's instincts just yet.
