1. "Not interested, Benny. Fuck off."

Benny chuckles. "I thought you might say that," he says.

You ignore him and walk back to the car, and get in.

Benny is sitting next to you in the driver's seat when you do. "That's alright. I'm sure you'll come around eventually. You're going to need all the help you can get, once you get to Limestone," he says, absently adjusting the rear view mirror all the way around backward.

You sit back and close your eyes. After a minute or two, the car down opens and Jesse hops in.

"You alright?" she asks.

"Yeah, fine," you say, opening your eyes and smiling at her. "You?"

"Fine," she says, and turns the ignition.

As you pick up speed, you glance at the fuel gauge. It's pretty damn low, about 1/8th. "How much longer to Limestone?" you ask.

"Not long," Jesse replies. "About ten minutes."

"Savor them," says Benny from the backseat. "Savor them, and soak up the sunlight."

His final words are quiet, whispering, as he fades away from view.

You ignore him and fix the rear view mirror. Jesse glances at you but doesn't say anything. Afterward, you reach into the backseat and grab a beer, drinking it quickly. The taste is still pretty bad. Something between puke and chalk.

The road flashes by. You pass a few vineyards, with houses nearby, but no signs of activity, no cars. It seems like everyone has cleared out of these hills.

"So what's the plan, once we get there?" Jesse asks.

"I'm not sure, honestly," you say. "Guns would be nice. We might wanna head for that friend's place, see what we can find."

Jesse nods. "We need to find another vehicle soon," she says.

"We've got the extra can of gas," you say.

"If we're going to put that in, I have a feeling it should be now, before we reach the city," Jesse says.

1. Good idea. Fill 'er up.

2. Better to save it for an emergency. Lots of cars in a city.

I have this bad habit of only reading the ends of chapters.

Benny's ominous warning probably isn't a fuck you move here. I'm not sure we're going to have the time it'll take to transfer all of our goods either, even if we do find a new vehicle. Which we should do no matter what, while we're looting.

Incidentally, that poll up top is a really good idea. I'm surprised no one thought of doing it sooner. If it's not too much trouble, I would like a bit more of the response option filled in. Instead of just the number, to make each new day absolutely clear.

The optimal choice, for me, would have been fill-er-halfway-up and save half the gasoline in case we need it to light a vineman on fire. I picked 1 though.

I vote we fill her up. Saving the gas for some supposed vehicle we may or may not find (or have the time to commandeer) sounds too much like a gamble to me. Better to use what we have, for now.

Voted 1. as I don't see us carrying all this stuff around for very long if we're cut off from the car.

The only real scenario where it would be useful to keep it is if we're in a car that runs out of gas on the highway, where there will presumably be more cars.

Assuming we don't engage in "fill gas tank" quick time event or something.

Also do we have any general strategy beyond getting guns and moving north? Are we actually playing Oregon trail? Because that's where we seem to be going.

If we get dicked over there with the full car, we're probably not going to make it to another car.  Fill it up now and we'll deal with what comes when we have to.  We just need to get to the god damn guns, and we should've at least heard Benny out :T

Done.

At the moment, you're moving toward the coast. The "hills" in question are the coastal range to the west of the California Valley. Really, you've left the foothills and are now somewhere between full mountains and hills.

For the record, at the moment the area you're in is based off a real place. Limestone is a bit larger than the city I'm overwriting, though.

Like others have said, no sense saving gas for a vehicle that may never come.

But didn't we already discover that fire, though fatal, didn't particularly diminish the immediate threat of vine monsters?

Landslide for option 1.

1. Good idea. Fill 'er up.

Jesse pulls over and you hop out of the car, heading around back to the trunk.

"Hey, can you pop the trunk open?" you say up to her.

Chunk.

You lift the can and carry it over to the gas cap. Locked.

"I need the keys," you say.

Jesse turns off the engine and steps out of the vehicle. Beneath her glasses, she watches you.

You take the keys from her outstretched hand and open the cap. As you lift the can to insert the long plastic neck extending from the opening, Jesse continues to watch you.

"What happened back there?" she suddenly asks.

You continue to pour.

"Back where?" you say.

Jesse shifts from one foot to the other. "In the field. You just stood there, shaking. And you were muttering, or something. It was creepy."

"Uh..."

"And in the car, you kept fiddling with the mirror. It was odd. Is there something going on with you I should know about?"

"Well..."

"Does this have something to do with this 'Benny' person?"

The gas can finishes pouring, empty now in your arms.

*******************************

1. Tell her everything.

2. Pretend you don't know what she's talking about.

3. Explain that the infection is making you behave oddly, but don't mention Benny.

4. "Well, what about you? Seems like an odd time to have to go pee, all the sudden. Is there something going on I should know about?"

Well we've been acting rather weird as of late, so 3 seems like a good choice as 1 mentions the whole "I can be controlled by my mind worms who want me to kill you." She'll probably consider you less reliable, but whatever. The character seems like a terrible liar, so acting confused and bewildered at what's going should work. Because that is what you feel like.

She'll probably press you harder on who Benny is afterwards, but that would require her to bring up the extent of her eavesdropping. Which would seem slightly suspicious thing to do when you're meant to be going to the bathroom, bringing us back to choice 4.

I guess Benny could be some old (dead) acquaintance of ours if she presses the point too much. Just say we had a falling out with him pre-worm attack and now we are just angsting out loud.

This plan is foolproof.

Fake Edit: Is there a "revoke vote" option? For future reference.

I'm guessing she's seeing specters of whoever infected her. We should probably just be forward with it. If for no other reason than that she knows we're trying to fight this infection rather than already completely in its grips.
This is probably a better way to respond than to just turn it around. I'm sure she'll volunteer if we're open about it.

Option 3: This Jesse person is the little girl we chose in our dreams... the other worm-infection, trying to manipulate me. Benny is probably a third-party from the faceless and the little girl.

Imagining the main driving around, arguing with himself and hiding aspects of a psychotic side-effect caused by parasites from one-another...

Thanks for that, Friday. That thought alone justifies the time I spend posting in this thread.

I'm thinking you could publish if you set your mind to it.

I don't see why full disclosure would be a bad thing at this point. If she wants to split after hearing the story, that's up to her. At the very least, lying to her in order to coerce her into staying with us is just going to put her even more at risk, and would be a dick move regardless.

Who knows, she might even have had a similar experience and know how to fix it.

The option to change your vote, which I somehow missed before and just now found, has been toggled.
