Kill the thing in the dumpster before it becomes the Big Bad and/or Final Boss.

Not that I think it'd actually work. Benny would probably choose that moment to screw things up.

Also, I'm IP-banned, so no more map updates.

1. Proceed to friend's house.

"Let's head to your dad's friend's house. He should have some medical supplies there, right?"

Jesse shrugs as she straps on her seat belt. "I dunno. Maybe."

"Well, if you see a pharmacy, stop," you say, groaning a bit as you settle into your seat and adjust your wounded arm so it doesn't hurt so much.

Jesse nods. "Alright. I think there might be a Walgreens on the way, actually."

From the back of the cab, Max sticks his nose forward and licks the back of your ear. You laugh a little and ward him off with your good arm. "Well, we'll take a look at it if we pass it. Don't go out of your way, though."

Jesse throws the panel truck in gear and turns right onto the road.

"Can you handle reloading this?" Jesse asks, putting the shotgun into your lap.

"I think so," you say, struggling. You find the loading slot and grab the box of shells. Doing all of this with one arm is time consuming, but you manage to load five more rounds into the weapon. After, you carefully count the shells left in the box.

"Five loaded, twelve left in reserve," you announce. Max sticks his nose in the box and sniffs at the small pile of shells left, whining.

"We're gonna need more ammo soon if we keep getting into situations like that," Jesse notes.

"Yeah," you say, your eyelids dropping. You are suddenly very tired.

"What was the deal with those rats, anyway? It was so creepy how they all swarmed and then turned into those things."

"He... he did it. He sent them against us. Not just them. They were just the first to arrive."

Jesse turns and looks at you. "He? What do you mean?"

"I... I felt his thoughts. I... no. That's wrong. For a moment... it felt like..."

Jesse swerves around a car parked in the middle of the street, and then turns right again down a short connecting street, then left back onto main.

"What?"

You shake your head. Thinking about it gives you a headache, and adds to your sense of drowsiness. "I... all I can say is I can hear him. But that's not quite right."

"Him? Him who?"

Max curls up in the back and snorts as his nose encounters something interesting.

"That thing in the dumpster. Him."

You're out of the center of town, now. Main street is more open, fields on either side in front of houses, the occasional store or mini-strip mall. Everything looks deserted or looted. You pass a few turn offs, you're not able to read the street signs.

"Was this another one of his 'gifts'?"

"Something like that," you say. "He could feel us killing his 'family'. Wasn't too pleased about it."

Jesse is silent for a moment. A billboard up ahead catches your eye, but all it says is about an Indian Casino somewhere fifty miles or more from here.

"And he sent the rats?"

"He... reached out to them. Told them where we were," you say slowly. Something compels you to look in the side mirror at the back of the billboard.

you're not out yet

You blink, and the message vanishes. You rub your eyes with your good arm. Christ, your leg hurts. It feels like you have a band of heated iron around your thigh, sending flame up and down your leg. Your arm feels similar.

"How can you... you said you can 'feel' other infected? Is this how you were able to know what dumpster boy was up to?"

"Maybe," you say. "Ever since I first made contact with him, it's like... it's like I can feel them. Those near me. And even... some, farther away. But it's vague, odd. It pulses in and out."

Jesse looks worriedly at you then stares back at the road. A small crater has ruined the right lane, the left is partially blocked by a van which has apparently crashed headlong into it. Jesse drives the truck off the road a bit, scraping against a fence, to get around it and back onto the road.

"Drink some booze," she says.

"Not a bad idea," you reply, opening a bottle. The liquid is hot and horrible tasting as usual, but you find you don't mind it in comparison to the pain in your limbs.

A single Faceless stands motionless in the road ahead. Jesse pushes down the accelerator and rams it, sending it flying off into the dirt, bent over at an awkward angle.

"My first attempt to run over a Faceless didn't go so well," you say, taking another swallow.

You pass a mobile home park. The sign out front reads:

Shady Oaks Mobile Home Park
See Spot run. Run, Spot run.

You raise your eyebrows.

"Walgreens should be just ahead," Jesse says. "It's right on the edge of town, dad's friend lives in the outskirts past it, up in the hills."

"Odd place to put such a large store," you say.

"It's pretty new. Built about two years ago."

"Ah."

Jesse turns her head slightly to look at you in the rear view mirror. Her green eye is reflected in perfect clarity. The hole where her other eye used to be is covered by several strands of hair that have escaped from her ponytail.

"Can you... can you feel me?"

You're silent for a moment. "Yes," you say.

Jesse continues to watch you.

"But it's different, with you. I think it might be the fact you're fighting them off with alcohol. They don't like it. I could feel them dying, sort of, when we were shooting them. Not really at the time. It's so weird. Like, now, I can remember being there, and feeling them, looking at it, reaching for us behind the barricades. Feel them hurting, dying, as we killed them. Even the crawlers."

You shift in your seat, turning your neck to crack it. "But never at the moment. It's only a memory. Like there's a delay, or something. Some sort of lag. Like right now, at this moment, I can't feel you. I can't feel anything. But ever since we met up with that ... thing, I have these memories of feeling infected around me. But nothing reliable. And it still ebbs and flows erratically, even in my memory."

The road takes a slight curve to the right, the land on either side of you begins to rise. The fog is as thick as ever. Houses and trees cut dark slashes of shadow, swiftly passing by.

"Is this lag present for when you could sense that thing's thoughts?" Jesse asks.

"No, actually," you reply. "That was much more immediate. The first time, it was painful, and I lost my sense of self. I guess I fell to my knees, I don't know anything until I switched back. But the second time, in the Liquor store, it was almost like... I was two people. Still myself, but also... in this thing. Part of it."

"That sounds really fucked up," Jesse says.

"Yeah," you answer.

"You know the really fucked up part about you, though, is me," says Benny from behind you.

You glance back at your now long dead friend, who is sitting in the backseat, next to Max, with his feet up, sticking them into the front. He appears to be picking his teeth with a toothpick.

You grimace and turn away.

"Not looking so good, chum," Benny says. "Looks like our little small furry friends really took a bite out of you."

You stare out the window.

"Where you going, anyhow?" Benny says, pulling out one of his teeth and tossing it at your head. You feel it bounce off the back of your skull. Benny takes his feet down, leans forward, and spits a bloody mess on the front seat in between you and Jesse.

"There it is," Jesse says. "Walgreens. Want me to stop, check it out? Or just keep going?"

Benny finishes rooting around in his mouth and leans even closer, speaking now directly into your ear. You can feel his warm breath on the nape of you neck.

"I wouldn't recommend it, bro," he says softly. "Really, take it from me. You don't want to go in there."

Max, who has so far been oblivious to everything, laying in the back, suddenly stands. He turns toward Benny, sniffs for a moment, then bares his teeth, and growls.

Benny leans back and giggles. "Heya, pooch," he says, addressing the dog. "Sorry 'bout the smell, really. Not my fault, though, you know, being dead and all. Your new master is the one you should be blaming for the odor."

"Hey," Jesse says. "You hear me? Max, shush."

"Now, this is interesting," Benny says, smiling at you with a bloody mouth. The color of the blood is almost black. "What do you think it means, that your new pet can see me?"

Then he throws his head back, and laughs, spraying speckles of black all over you.

1. Ask Benny about Walgreens.

2. Ask Benny about the Thing in the Dumpster.

3. Ignore Benny, instruct Jesse to continue past Walgreens without stopping.

4. Ignore Benny, instruct Jesse to pull into the parking lot to check it out from the outside.

Time to get some info out of this guy.  I say we try to communicate.  Jesse will understand.

Walgreen's is a pressing concern, let's ask about that.

I'd suggest asking Benny about the dumpster, but somehow I think the questions' answers overlap.

Benny's opposition means Walgreens is a deathtrap he wants us to stay away from a or a Nicole/Blue place. We're not seeing any blue writing, so I doubt it's that.

It could also be some survivor's held up in the mall, but I doubt they'll be friendly to strangers after this long.

Options 1 and 2 (Ask Benny about Walgreens, Ask Benny about Dumpster) are tied for the lead, each at three votes. I'm going to bed now, and I doubt someone is going to come along in the next hour or so before the poll expires to vote, so I am editing the poll and resetting the options.

Choices have been narrowed to 1/2. If another tie occurs, I will flip a coin. I don't like leaving the choice to chance, but I dislike stalling the story more.

There was a total of seven voters, narrowing it to two choices should reveal a winner, even if nobody new votes.

(Status screen has been updated to current, synopsis likewise. Added links to original threads.)

Ah, there we go. Walgreens leads 6 to 1. Updating.

1. Ask Benny about Walgreens.

Suppressing the urge to wipe off the blood that you know isn't actually on your face with your hand, you turn to Benny and narrow your eyes.

"Max," you say. "It's alright. Lay down."

Max turns to you and whines softly. You reach out and scratch behind his ears, and he licks your fingers before going back down to the floor.

"Jesse, hold on a moment. Just pull over."

Jesse looks at you and turns off the road, just before the turn off to the Walgreens parking lot, which you can vaguely see through the mist. The building itself is out of sight behind the lot.

"Alright," you say, looking at Benny. "You claim to know what's going on in there. So spill it."

Benny smiles as you address him. He seems to suddenly harden in your vision, and the smell of rotting flesh wafts over you. The blood in his mouth is gone.

"What?" Jesse says. "How would I --"

"Not you," you say, still looking at Benny. "Benny's in the back. He says he knows something about the Walgreens."

Jesse looks sidelong at you, then looks over her shoulder, obviously not seeing anything.

Benny reaches out with one arm and brushes a hair away from her face. "Such a lovely girl," he says.

"Leave her alone, you bastard," you say through suddenly clenched teeth.

Benny turns his head toward you, grinning hugely, his arm still frozen in front of Jesse's face. "Touchy, touchy," he says, withdrawing his hand. Jesse brings a hand up to her face, softly touching her own cheek.

"What's going on?" she asks.

"Shh. It's alright," you reply. "Just give me a minute."

Jesse swallows and draws away from you in her seat.

"Now," you say, staring at Benny. "What's going on in that Walgreens."

"You wanna know?" Benny says.

"Yeah," you say.

Benny smiles, lips shut, and reaches out in a quick motion toward your head.

You flinch back, but his arm seems to extend, and his finger inserts itself into your right ear.

There is a very cold sensation, followed by a familiar warmth, spreading all over your body.

Your vision goes blurry, sinks, shifts. Benny's smiling face fades to darkness. In the corner of your failing vision, you see Jesse's face suddenly look concerned, and lean forward toward you.

***************************

You open your eyes.

Except you don't have any eyes.

But still, you can see. Somehow. Not in the usual manner, you know that much. But still somehow you are aware of your immediate surroundings, through some medium your brain cannot process or understand. Layers and layers. Hundreds of voices echoing in your head. Except it's not your head anymore.

You are Brandon Irving, a middle aged man who has lived in Limestone for over ten years. You're married to a wonderful wife, and you have two sons and a daughter. They have all been found and infected. You did your wife first. She tried to hit you with a hammer.

Except none of this information matters to you. It's what you might call "trash". Not worth the space it would have taken up to remember. Far too many other things command your attention. Like finding more meat for the pits. Always so many mouths to feed. Always.

The Hunters found a small group of humans holed up in this building. You and many others were called, to exhaust their supply of ammunition so the Hunters could move in. You arrived with the second wave. The front of the building is barricaded, but the barricades are falling. You step in through a crack in the defenses, your vines twisting.

You round a corner and see a woman firing a hunting rifle at another Faceless. Quiet now. She is falling back down the aisle toward you. She isn't aware of you. Ah. Yes. She is reloading.

You move forward toward her and she turns right into you. Your vines extend and wrap around her lovingly. She opens her mouth to scream and your vines shoot down her throat, exploding outwards from her upper chest. Her arms go limp and the rifle clatters to the ground.

The sweet, sweet taste of blood is on your non-existent lips, whetting your appetite for more. But This blood is not meant for you. You must obey the others. You drop the body.

A young man looks down the aisle and sees you. He screams the woman's name, but you forget it as soon as he says it. Not important.

The weapon he's raising is likewise unimportant. As the bullets tear into your chest and central nest, you are content to die. More are coming. His ammo is limited.

You slump to the ground. If you had a mouth, you would be smiling.

*********************************

Now you are Charlotte Johnston. Before she was family, she was a stripper working her way through college. She succumbed to the family while still in her dancer's outfit. Her vines wrap around her like snakes, sensuous and lethal. You are with the main horde of Faceless assaulting the front entrance.

Around you, others drop to the ground as bullets tear into them. Some take hits to the legs, head, or arms which are raised up to protect the central nest. They are merely slowed to one degree or another. A large bald black man raises a hunting shotgun at you and blows your head clean off your shoulders. You continue forward.

They are falling back now, unable to maintain their perimeter. They do not know that more family advance from all sides. They were surrounded and doomed a long time ago. Even now family slip through side entrances, rear exits, areas left unguarded or simply blocked off and thought safe. But the family is strong, no barricade can hold for long.

A stray bullet rips through your spine, severing motor functions. The central nest is damaged but intact. Someone will be along shortly to extract you.

************************

You are Keith Oldman. You are a successful investment banker. Your suit is torn now, your greed for money shifted for something else. You stalk the aisles of the building, turning a corner to block the escape of two humans who rush blindly down escape routes they thought would be clear. Their weapons are empty, exhausted. You welcome them in the embrace of the family. Another human comes, sees your work, and rushes at you with a magnum. Two bullets slam into your chest, but not enough.

The weapon clicks empty. The human's eyes go wide. You step forward over the mess at your feet. The human takes two steps backward, into another Faceless moving silently behind him. You watch, disinterested, as the vines wrap tight around his body, like a hundred constrictors squeezing their prey, until the body literally bursts open like a melon.

You move on.

*************************

The Hunters are entering the building now. It will be over soon. The last few humans are clustered toward the rear exit in the back of the pharmacy. The Hunters move quickly and silently down the aisles toward them.

As Keith, you step forward just before the Hunters. A few bullets hit you in the arms and head. There is a small boy, protected in the back, who is staring at you with frightened, huge eyes. Behind him, through the door the humans thought blocked from the inside, what used to be a doberman steps silently into view. His frontal vines quiver in anticipation, the hunting instinct not wholly lost.

The boy, perhaps seven or eight, senses something and turns. His scream goes unnoticed by the remaining adults. Their weapons are gone. Their escape is blocked. All will be found. It is only a matter of time.

From behind the doberman, another hunter. Then another.

With practiced timing, the Hunters leap from behind and in front, together, at once. The humans aren't even able to down one of them before their slithering jaws close on them.

What's this? The boy is gone. You and Keith turn to watch him running down an aisle away from you. You lean forward, and scream. Two hunters immediately respond, lifting their maws from the meat, and lope down the aisle after the boy. He does not make it far.

*********************************************

You come back to yourself. Jesse is shaking you. "Are you alright? Hey, are you OK?"

Your head swims. Your body feels warm and tingly. "Yeah," you manage. "I'm alright."

Benny sits in the backseat, watching you, a twinkle in his eye.

You push Jesse away and sit upright. "Damn you," you say to Benny. He grins in reply.

"Well, what did you think I meant? Do you think the humans are winning this war? This isn't a war, bro. This is a slaughter. Your race is done for. Do you think I couldn't show you a hundred more scenarios much the same as the one you just witnessed? It's going on all around you, everywhere."

You reach out and grab Benny by his shirtfront. "You're lying. We have guns. We have a military. We're going to kick your ass back to wherever you came from."

Benny chokes, he's laughing so hard. "You... you really believe that?!" he sputters. "Man, you are -- you're a riot! You actually think the cavalry is going to roll in soon, guns blazing, solving all your problems?"

You shake Benny back and forth, rage blinding your senses. "You -- we're going to show you, you'll see --"

Jesse puts a hand on you, but you throw it off. She draws away from you, up against the driver's side door.

"Man, you're wonderful, bro," Benny says, still giggling. "I wouldn't trade you in for anybody. I love that you won't give up. It's so... fun."

You stop shaking Benny and throw him back against the wall of the cab. He merely regards you, still grinning through rotten teeth.

"You... you're no help to me. You're a monster. Go away."

Benny's grin vanishes and he grows serious. "Hey, you're the one who wanted to know what was going on in there," he says. "I was just doing what you wanted."

"You made me... you made me one of them. You made me kill them."

Benny shakes his head. "No. What you saw happened already. It wasn't a live feed, so to speak. You said it yourself: You can only 'feel' in memory."

You look sidelong at him. "Then... what I saw was in the past?"

"Call it a racial memory," Benny says. "I merely transferred it to you. Think about it. Did you have any control, at all? No. Because it had already happened. You couldn't stop it from happening because it had already gone down. There's nothing left for you in there."

You blink. "The weapons. The pharmacy."

"Sure, you want some empty guns? Maybe a few bullets left, here and there? You might find some medicine, sure. But who knows how many Faceless and Hunters are left in there? You really want to risk it? That place fell a long time ago. Going in there is stupid."

You stare down at the floor of the cab. "Benny, you say you don't want me dead. What are your goals, then?"

"Goals?" Benny echoes. "I don't have goals. I'm just here for the ride. For the shits and giggles. And anyway, how could I have goals? I'm you, remember?"

"You're not me," you reply.

"OK, maybe not exactly," Benny admits. "But I'm at least partially you. Maybe a part you'd like to ignore. But a part of you, nonetheless. My goals are your own: Survival."

"You're full of shit. You might not want me dead, but what about that deal we made? This 'favor' you say I owe you? You're up to something. I'm sure of it."

Benny smiles. "Guess we'll just have to find out, won't we?"

He begins to fade away. "Remember, bro. I gave you the chance to come with me. You turned me down. You chose her."

He's gone, vanished. Max whimpers.

You put your hands up to your face, cradling it. You stay that way for a long time.

Finally you raise your head and look at Jesse. Her face is smooth, watching you.

"Sorry," you say. "Benny... can be irritating."

"What happened?" she asks softly.

You quickly give a brief overview of what transpired, and your conversation with Benny. Jesse's face is straight the whole time.

"Do you think he was lying about what happened in there? Like, maybe what he showed you wasn't real?" she asks.

"I don't think so," you reply. "At least, I'd be surprised. It felt... very real."

Jesse looks at you. "I don't know what to say. I'm sorry."

"No, it's me who should be sorry," you say. "I didn't mean to frighten you."

"It's alright," she says, putting a hand on your arm. "Compared to seeing your dead dad tell you to kill yourself, this is a cakewalk."

You smile. "Man, we are just one fucked up pair, aren't we?"

"Yeah," Jesse says. "But here's a question, Clark. What do you want to do now?"

**********************************

1. Go into the parking lot.

2. Benny wasn't lying. It's too dangerous there. Continue on.

Mmmyep.  Nothing here for us.

Also, let's keep the acknowledging of Benny to an absolute minimum.  I don't like some of the implications this 'conversation' has had.

We need to move on.

I disagree with not acknowledging Benny.  He just may have saved our life there, you know.  And Jesse's and Max's by proxy.

Scrambling around with half-empty weapons and waiting for ourselves to bleed to death or get fully infected is not going to get us anywhere.  We need to find out what the fuck is going on, and Benny's a piece of the puzzle.  We can't keep ignoring him so much.

Knowledge is beginning to be just as important as base survival here, since we can only hold out for so long.  And if there's no hope, well, might as well find enlightenment before succumbing, eh?

The point that some people are concerned with is that acknowledging Benny's existence may be furthering the infection.

Benny's stated objectives have been:

  • Increase his control

I'm leaning to "him" wanting his freedom from No Face and the gang by hijacking our body and then frolicking or whatever for fun. I imagine being a worm from space is a tad restrictive/dull.

That doesn't really explain his reference to The Choice scene, but the Benny then is different from the one now. The current version may be a 'corrupted' version or just a new worm adopting the old persona to mess with us. I say the latter, myself.

Also, I am very disappointed at the lack of boss monsters! :whoops:
