Played the first level at night, in the dark, headphones on, volume turned up, and monitor two feet away.

Played the second level exclusively during the day, speakers on, volume turned down, and monitor four feet away.

I'll say it again, the scariest things in Dead Space are the survivors.

:sarcasm: Skins w/enhanced stats. Oh boy. Can't wait.

As usual, capturing screens while playing. Best event so far:

:)

So, uh, you wanna go out for a cup of coffee? Or... Morphine?

Popular Mechanic's 4 Reasons Why Dead Space is the Scariest Game Ever is missing one vital point in their whore-worthy yet otherwise factual article, and that's the deliberately sluggish controls. The creepy crawlies creep and crawl faster than Olympic athletes, all while Isaac labors with great effort to merely lug around the hemis they call weaponry in the future.

granted, most of the weapons aren't designed for actual combat, they are designed to be used for mining. (flamethrower is for melting comets, plasma cutter and its big brother the linegun are for well, cutting.)

not sure what the force gun would be good for in a mining environment, but it is hard to argue against a giant shit-ruining air cannon.

pulverizing rock?

Even the pulse rifle seems more improvised weapon than military hardware.

I am positive the secondary fire of the pulse rifle is for laughs and is in no way a serious combat tool.  I've never seen it hit anything.

God damnit DeadSpace.

I signed up to be scared but fucking meat beast monster people, not to fucking shoot fucking asteroids that seem to move at whatever fucking speed they want, only fully rez THE MOMENT OF IMPACT and can go off-screen well before they hit.

I want to throw my controller THROUGH THE FACE of whoever thought that was a good idea.

the worst part is that even on different difficulties, it doesn't change at all, the asteroids do just as much damage, and the patterns can be just as bullshit.

plus there's that DONT GO UNDER 50% SHIELDS acheivement, but you start at 80 something, and some asteroids do massive fucking damage for no reason

Second attempt. Created a rhythm for the rate of fire, and kept shots centered into a circular motion.

Re: Dead Space

To my passive bewilderment, last week I discovered that 'ol Dead Space had an extensive prequel marketing campaign in the form of a six issue comic book series (adapted into online episodes), an interactive flash-based website, and a Direct-To-Video animated movie (which simultaneously premiered on Starz Network). Adversely, each of them hold flaws of their own, and all fail to tie directly enough in with the game's plot.

The Image comic is the strongest of the works, drawn by Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night), with characters working out the mystery of just uncovered The Marker. The fate and reasoning behind much of the cast is scatterbrained, and the video series has laughable direction. For a six issue series, not enough new information opposite of the game is presented.

The interactive website holds the weakest plotline of them all, concerning two story threads casted by what can only be described as some low-rent local acting troupe. Needed more organization, and less Guys - In - Front - Of - A - Green - Screen - Delivering - Lines - They've - Just - Memorized. Pass.

Finally, the animated film, which has received the most attention (selling half a million dollars worth of DVD & Blu-Ray units on opening week) is Alien(s): Animated. This one can actually be detrimental if viewed before playing the game, as objects and artifacts work differently, locations are changed, and scenes are altered. A senseless gorefest done in the same animation style as all those KidsWB properties bought off Sony (Godzilla, MiB, Ghostbusters Extreme).

These prequels center around the same point in time, and follow the same setup of 'Crew goes crazy,
lone survivor records a parting message'
. Oh, and
everyone dies. Yawn.
EA has stated that they wish to pursue a similar marketing tactic with other titles in the future, so unless someone wises up and creates a strong singular story among the mediums that bothers to introduce new information, expect more time-wasting secondary merchandise masqueraded around as vital additions to grace our presence well into the coming years.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game Arc.  It does make for some incredibly pretty pictures.  I just wish I could kill the guys at gamestop and take their 'for display only' artbook.

I just started playing this game a few days ago, and I have one thing to say: Whoever did the mouse control for the asteroid shooting part of the game should be shot. Half of the time when I moved my mouse up the gun moved to the LEFT. I managed to beat the level three tries later with the goddamned 360 controller, which actually made the gun move where I wanted it to move but was still too sensitive to hit the rocks with precision.

Otherwise the game is fucking awesome.
