Connotation is more difficult on the internet.  Sarcasm likewise.  Body language, tone of voice, and other nonverbal cues let you convey subtext in person that is difficult to reproduce on a computer.

It should not surprise you that people look for other means of reproducing these effects.

This, obviously.  It's where tiny text, emoticons, extra or missing capitals, long lines, subtle links and every other damn thing you people hate comes from.  I guess it's not all that shocking that a bunch of you who have problems with nonverbal communication in real life tend to project that bit onto the internet as well.

Not that I'm entirely making fun of you guys.  I'm obviously hyperlexic* and I'm sure I'm not the only one - can't blame you all for preferring text to subtext.  But, hell, it's boring after a while, dig?

* Yes it is in fact diagnosed thank you for asking.

On that note, Kazz (and anybody else I talk to online) can always tell if I'm angry on aim because then I decide to use capitals at the beginning of my sentences, as well as periods at the end of my sentences.

Heh, I know a girl who does that in reverse.  Bad punctuation means it's time to start kissing ass.

Conversational text is (in my opinion, at least) pretty different than technical or prose writing. I find that even something like leaving the period off the end of a sentence gives it a different timbre. 75%* of communication is context and nuance, after all. I mean it's not like this is rocket surgery OK

So, who's going to make the first "High-Context" joke?

Only if the text itself is boring, which is always my cue to rely on arbitrary imagery while hoping against hope that others don't discover just how vapid my messages truly are.

It's not like "arbitrary images" doesn't fit right in with all the other examples of subtext I described.

...what's amazing is that, after, what, EIGHT GODDAMN YEARS or whatever, people still automatically assume a post that's gone somewhere else has been deleted by an evil admin, even though that's happened, what, like TWICE EVER.

Paco, I expect you to be smarter than Shinra.

Tiniest text ever created at Stanford.

The author of the article doesn't seem too fond of it either.
