NaNoWriMo'8
« on: October 28, 2008, 11:05:15 AM »

I haven't heard anybody muttering about NaNoWriMo this year.  That's probably just as well, seeing as how last year I probably got further than anyone else by actively mocking the idea.  The thing is, I think I'm actually going to do it this year.

Partly I'm in it because, to be honest, I have an unfortunate surplus of free time (which is kind of the opposite of my problem last November) and partly because, if I'm going to try to survive by freelancing, I might as well try my hand at being a literal hack.

So is anybody with me on this?  If it doesn't get too bogged down I might actually post my bullshit here as it gets written.  Expect a lot less political incorrectness and testing the boundaries of fair use this time.  Or, you know, maybe not.  I'm a naturally irreverent bastard.

I am all over this. Now that I have approximately one billion more free times than last year, I might do better than 20%!

I'm not certain I have the discipline to do something for a month and not get paid. I don't think I've written so much as a short story in ten years, and I doubt I'll ever be a novelist for pessimist reasons I'll omit so as not to discourage anyone else from entering NaNoWriMo, which they should.

One of the nice things about the format is that it frees you from any concerns about consistency, originality, or quality, allowing you to basically type random shit and occasionally come up with stuff that people seem to like.

Basically you're writing a blog.

I have less free time this November, but I still intend to do it. Hopefully I will beat my record that I cannot remember.  :slow:

Maybe I'll do a forum-based spontaneous choose-your-own-adventure thing for my commitment. Those seem to be popular.

I did 0 words last year, so I only have nowhere to go but up!  I just did 24 Hour Comic Book day, so I'm ready to give this a shot and get as far as I can.

So it's a well known fact that whatever you're currently reading is going to flavor your writing.  What's your book going to taste like?

Personally, I'm counting my TV Tropes habit as research.  I'm sure it'll make my novel sound like a cross between Wikipedia and a sarcastic video game reviewer, but at least I'll have intimate knowledge of every subversion in the book.

The WriMo website should keep track of other stats besides total words, such as number of tropes subverted, number of vampires slain, usage of the word "fuck", number of plot holes, etc.

I was intending to keep a daily blog for this.  Maybe I'll throw those numbers in as a bonus.
