I think it really comes down to whether or not you enjoy the combat in the first place.  Getting jumped by three raiders isn't a problem if I have fun killing them.  Which I do.

I originally went with a small guns, medicine and sneak guy.

After halfway through the game and having shitty weapons and armor CND's, I restarted today as a melee, speech and repair guy. Three hours in and I have more money, better melee weapons and armor than the other dude. All hail Repair.

You don't need to tag repair for it to be good. Tagging only improves a skill at the beginning of the game. By the time you have 50 points in repair you can repair most weapons to about 75%, which is quite good. Only very good weapons need higher skill.

Yeah, but like Nor said, weapon damage seems to be weighted towards the higher end of the condition meter.  Repairing a weapon (or armor) from 75% cond to 100% makes a much bigger difference than repairing from 50% to 75%.

Probably has a lot to do with Fallout 3 being more based on Oblivion than Fallout.  I know in Oblivion the actual type of weapon you had didn't necessarily have an effect on the damage it did; Steel items only potentially did more damage than Iron because they had a higher maximum health (I thought this was pretty clever, actually, once I realized this and didn't just see "uhh iron and steel do the same damage, wtf?").

Yes, but the top end of damage is just gravy. Most things are easily dead before you ever need that damage.

Sure, but will their heads necessarily explode?  This is important.

Oh yeah, they totally still explode, and if you're worried about that, Bloody Mess is just one perk away. I can't express the joy I feel when I superman punch some raider in the chest to have his entire body explode and fly across the room.

Also, if you build the railway rifle, whatever body parts it rips off get pinned to the opposite wall/ceiling/tree.

And the only reason I was out of stimpacks was because I hadn't bought any in five hours.  I eventually had to map travel back to Megaton to resupply, and that irritated me.

How the fuck do you run out of stimpaks? I currently have over 200, and I rarely even bother to buy them, the game hands them out like candy. The only reason I ever do buy them is when I stop to sell shit to vendors and they don't have enough caps to cover whatever I'm selling, so I buy a few stims to close the gap. I'd buy ammo instead, except I have great steaming piles of that, too. And over 9k in caps. And enough radaway and rad-x to take a month long vacation in a nuclear reactor. Then again, I've been doing a lot of exploring. I suppose if you're jetting along the main quest supplies might be harder to come by.

What's awesome is that despite drowning in supplies and caps, the game doesn't really feel bullshit easy, it just feels like the game's not bullshitting me on resources, which I appreciate.

Weird, i'm constantly drowning in nukla cola and the rad remover, but rarely get stims.

Do cold colas get not cold?

also that "PLANT THING IN CRABMAN NEST BUT DONT KILL ANY OF THEM" quest was retarded.

Meh, that one's easy. Just bring a few stealth boys. Or wait until you have a high stealth rating, whichever.

Or just kill them and lie about it, or just kill them and get the quest credit anyway. Not killing them is an optional goal

Worth noting you should go back to the memorial after quest turnin and CLEAR THE PLACE OUT -- lotsa medicine, some ammo and parts, and most importantly, a dean's electronics book AND a new england journal of medicine.

Just a note, gang: don't try this if you're melee, unarmed, or aren't packing a combat shotgun or plasma rifle. Seriously. I fucking hate mirelurks.

Anyone else found the Nuka-Cola factory yet?
