Little Big Planet
« on: November 01, 2008, 08:26:33 PM »

So, I wasn't really sure why I got a PS3 in the first place.  I thought it was to play MGS4; it turns out that I was mistaken.

The real reason I got a PS3 was to play Little Big Planet.  I just hadn't realized it yet.

If you're on PSN, my username is jsnlxndrlv.  (Jason Alexander Love minus all the spaces and vowels.  You aren't the first to complain about it.)

I love constructing forts out of cardboard and then attacking them with my death blimp.

Every time I get all pumped and ready to make my zombie apocolypse or honey I shrunk the kids LBP stage, I realize that doing so is going to entail a good 30 minutes of forced tutorial and... well... end up just playing Fallout instead. I'm gettin' there.

Loving all the simple, yet undeniably fun physics tricks I'm running into in campaign. Rotating Death Ball mazes, seamless racing bits, Wormsish destructable terrain, anything with bungie cords... glad this all works like it's supposed to, not just visual candy. Makes me want to get creative in the stage builder.

I traded in a bunch of old games so I could get this. My username is aett, and I've sat through some of the tutorials but not all of them so I don't have any real levels made - and I probably never will! The campaign mode is fun, though, and I hope to try user-created levels as soon as the online capabilities stop sucking. I can't connect 2 out of 3 times and when I do, I get bumped off. I've been hearing a lot of complaints about it on other sites, too.

It's fun to build a giant glass ramp, stick the level entrance above it, and run the little sack dude down it at 3000 mph.

Right about the time I started experimenting with floats held down by bungee cords lifting hinged bits to create flap traps I started to get really sick* and had to quit.

I also wanted to make a giant ball you can climb down inside of, line the inside with switches that close the trapdoor entrance, and walk the inside of to make it roll through a level at a jillion mph.

* cough cough blech where did this cold come from?!

It's funny--in a house with three tvs, three 360s, and three copies of Fallout 3 (including my own), all I can put serious time into is this.  I played through the first seven regions of story mode on my roommate's PS3 and spent enough time with the level editor to be able to quickly construct rocket-cars, tanks, and other vehicles.  My favorite level is possibly Frida Destroys Everything With Her Skulldozer.

Anyway, I'm at my girlfriend's place today with my own PS3, and it's nice to see that the vast majority of the tutorials are easily skippable.  The only mandatory building tutorial you can't skip if you want to use the associated icon is the one on making creatures.  Still haven't quite gotten the hang of it, since most of the enemies I'm building seem indestructible, no matter how many times I check the "vulnerable" checkbox and verify that yes, I used the "unprotected" brain-type.  Jump up on 'em, shoot electric bullets at 'em--nope, they keep plodding along as usual.  Weird.

I would love to see a tutorial on making level-sized objects out of material that doesn't quickly get "too complex to add any more material to".  I think the trick may be to create smaller building parts that you stamp down a bunch of copies of and then glue them together.

I was a little upset that I couldn't seem to find a way to glue things to the walls. I may have been missing something. I hope I was, because next time I make a level I am totally building a giant pachinko machine.

Like I said, I haven't completed all the tutorials yet, so I haven't opened up all of the tools that are available.

Oh, and I was right - there IS an ice level that I haven't reached yet. Next time you visit, I'll try to have more stuff unlocked for you to mess around with.

Unless you've learned to play with your toes (or cat suddenly loves lbp), you'll need help  ::D:

She does enjoy playing it, but those x2 bonuses just give you a few new objects and stickers and such. The majority of stuff can be earned on your own.

In other news: I played a bunch of player-created levels last night. The Batman: Arkham Asylum level was pretty cool, and the Airman music level was surprisingly accurate sounding. I haven't seen many good levels that are actually... levels, and not gimmicks.

Beat the story mode.  Julie happened to glance over while I was in one of the later stages, and said I had an expression of "absolute wonder".  Still need to either play these online to get some of the cooperative challenges, or just buy another controller.

As for sticking things "to the walls"--anything built with (or attached to) antimatter material can't fall.

There were more mandatory tutorials than I thought.  Still, it's only a question of getting the tutorial objective from the queen and satisfying the requirements, even while the video is going.

Can't seem to find a way to get an emitter to produce created shapes. I wanted an emitter that releases peach floaty half-circles at two second intervals to act as a Mario style endless elevator, but the only things I could get emitters to produce were pre-fabs. Am I missing something?

Yes?  You need to save the prefabs in your personal collection of creations; once you've done that, they should appear at the bottom of the list of possible emissions.

I contend that Little Big Planet's Metal Gear Solid levels have a better story than Metal Gear Solid 4's.

First I've heard of it. Wouldn't surprise me if something like that happened, but it seems like that'd lose between 1/3 and 2/3 of the game's appeal.
