WaPo: Stevens race may be undecided for two weeks; Stevens likely to be expelled if reelected; replacing him requires a special election, not a Palin appointment.

I still don't expect her to run, though the article seems to think she will.  This election notwithstanding, Senators don't usually get elected President.

Of course, this is Palin we're talking about; the fact that she thinks she can be President at all is one of many, many things which prove she's a complete moron.

So, when are you guys going to fire David Wilkins?

We're trying as hard as we can to put up with the guy politely,  and having him meet our troops in the fronter of Kandahar Province for Xmas 07 was a nice touch, but we really don't have much time for anyone who defends the use of torture or outsourcing our citizens to those who do without our consent.

Thanks.

Jesus, tell me about it.

To say nothing of the fact that as little more a jumped-up municipal politican, the man was originally appointed as an actual insult to us.

It's like every time he opens his mouth he precedes it with "Hm, I have something really important to say...how can I totally FUCK IT UP?"

Because I have the same concerns about Obama turning out to be another Clinton, but sweet merciful Christ, his race has fuck-all to do with them.

...did I just hear that right? Did he just say what I thought he just said?

I think I'd be less floored by a shotgun blast.

...the worst part is THEY GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO BACKPEDAL AND HE DEFENDS IT.

I mean, everybody says stupid shit sometimes.  The problem is when someone calls you on it and, instead of just saying, "Yeah, that was dumb, sorry," you try to explain why it was totally okay.

change.gov is live.

Looks very appealing.  I would like to see how the Internet plays in the administration itself.  I guess this is a first taste of what it will be like.

Mandatory volunteering for high school ad college students is such a bad idea.

Mandatory

:?: :OoO: :?:

Quote
Expand Service-Learning in Our Nation's Schools: Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year. They will develop national guidelines for service- learning and will give schools better tools both to develop programs and to document student experience. Green Job Corps: Obama and Biden will create an energy-focused youth jobs program to provide disadvantaged youth with service opportunities weatherizing buildings and getting practical experience in fast-growing career fields.

Require 100 Hours of Service in College: Obama and Biden will establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.

Prediction: kids will show up and half-ass it because they don't actually want to be there, simultaneously hampering actual volunteer work, souring professionals to the kids who DO want to be there via prejudice, and removing the resume incentives for the genuinely motivated.

So should we stop community service as a punishment for criminals?  Seems like they would half ass it too.

I can't see an argument against the college tax credit.  If people feel they need the money to educate themselves, I think they would be a motivated volunteer.

Well, all I can say is that I know Canada employs the mandatory high school volunteering and that's exactly how it plays out because teenagers.

It will be nice if you're right about the college kids.  If only it were retroactive!

The college credit not being mandatory, that's off the table.

Mandatory service for middle school kids? A pipe dream so deep that Wart awaits at the end.

Really? I had to do the mandatory volunteering, and while a lot of my peers didn't particularly want to volunteer, only a very few were particularly antipathetic towards it.

But then, it is becoming increasingly apparent to me that my high school was some sort of aberration, because it had mostly Decent People.

Most of the orangesuits I've seen are genuinely into their work.  I think most of them are happy enough to be actually doing something to make up for their bullshit instead of sitting in their little cages feeling really sorry about it.

High school kids... yeah, don't think you're going to get much out of them.  They're already pretty annoyed about being stuck in the public education grinder, and aren't likely to be too sympathetic to the needs of the general public that's forced them into it.  The ones that want to help, want to help, of course, but then there's a reason why that's such an important factor for being accepted into college.  At least the ones who are doing it just to have it on their application have some initiative.
