Valve quietly acquired the creators of Alien Swarm some time ago, apparently to work on the Left 4 Dead games and Portal 2, and now they're releasing the long promised sequel/update to the popular mod completely free over Steam on Monday.

Additionally "Valve says it will be providing the entire codebase for the Steamworks-integrated title, explaining that access to those materials will give prospective developers 'more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production.'"

Base promotional tool the sick guise of a totally awesome co-op shooter? You be the judge. I'm going to shoot the shit out of some aliens though.

I loved the fuck out of the UT2004 mod, and I was dissapointed when the HL2 mod sort of dropped off the face of the earth. The 19th is Christmas in July.

Which they gave about as much press, if not more. I wouldn't even have known about this if third party sites hadn't picked up on it.

Have they said what license?  And whether the resources are covered under it or just the code?

I recognize a few of those titles, but would you be willing to post a list of the ones no one should miss at that price?

Drawn and Quarterly, too.

And just when I was wondering what to ask for for my birthday.

Ones I've got my eye on (as recommendations, not because I'm trawling for birthday presents):
Wilson -- Another critically-acclaimed book from Dan Clowes.
Masterpiece Comics -- Classic lit with superheroes.  I read Dostoevsky Comics a few years back; it was Crime and Punishment with the cast of Batman.  As good as it sounds, and now there's a whole book of them.
Nancy -- Until this past Free Comic Book Day, all I'd ever seen of Nancy were the dull-as-dishwater three-panel gag strips that they've been running in the papers far past their expiration date.  Imagine my surprise to find out that the original strips were frickin' amazing -- and SURREAL.
Get a Life -- I read a few of these strips in an FCBD offering too, some years back.  Good stuff.
Louis Riel -- Chester Brown's one of those legendary, transcendent figures in comics but I haven't read much of his work, just a few stray issues of Yummy Fur.  By all accounts, this is a good place to start, but if anyone has any better suggestions let me know.

And I'd like to hear other people's recommendations too.  D&Q does some truly wonderful stuff and I wish I knew more about it than, say, who had what color ring in Blackest Night or which artists Alan Moore is refusing to speak to.

Another big comics sale, from Things from Another World.  Lots of it's stuff with dinged-up covers, but for 70% off I'm okay with that.

It's mostly Marvel and Dark Horse stuff.  A few highlights: Akira, Astroboy, Marvels, Madman, HP Lovecraft's Haunt of Horror, Lone Wolf and Cub, Conan (both the classic Roy Thomas stuff and the more recent Busiek/Nord stuff), The Goon, Astonishing X-Men, Marvel Zombies, the Kree/Skrull War, Speak of the Devil by Gilbert Hernandez, Hellboy, Gremlins, Walter Simonson's Fantastic Four, Penny Arcade, Achewood, Little Lulu, Groo, and a bunch of Marvel Masterworks/Essentials/Visionaries reprints.

So does the comic industry just know when my birthday is, or what?

Yeah, I spent quite a lot more on comics today than I'd like to admit myself -- and that's BEFORE we get into the amount I talked my family members into spending.  On the plus side, it'll keep me occupied for a good long while and I won't be buying trades at full price in that time.

Also, I got like 2/3 of my Christmas shopping done.

Microsoft is running a deal where you can get two years of Gold for 84.99, and you get 1600 MS Fun Bux for free*. The two year thing is an automatic renewal that takes place whenever your current subscription ends, but you don't get the points until after the promotion is over.
