Lame Duck Tricks
« on: November 18, 2008, 10:52:39 AM »

NYT:

Quote
A last-minute Bush administration plan to grant sweeping new protections to health care providers who oppose abortion and other procedures on religious or moral grounds has provoked a torrent of objections, including a strenuous protest from the government agency that enforces job discrimination laws.

The proposed rule would prohibit recipients of federal money from discriminating against doctors, nurses and other health care workers who refuse to perform or to assist in the performance of abortions or sterilization procedures because of their “religious beliefs or moral convictions.”

It would also prevent hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices and drugstores from requiring employees with religious or moral objections to “assist in the performance of any part of a health service program or research activity” financed by the Department of Health and Human Services.

ITT we watch Bush trashing the hotel room before he leaves.

It's kind of hard to see the distinction between what Bush started doing once he realized he couldn't possibly get any more unpopular and what he's going to do now.

Well, now he's trying to cover the ass of everyone he's ever met, instead of just himself, Cheney, and the members of his cabinet who he isn't forced to throw to the wolves.

Bush wants his other son to have a turn with the toys too.

Would it be worth another 4 years of that shit just to be able to look back and say "Yes, they were all shit"?

The difference in character between George W. Bush and his father is astounding. You know, after the truly terribly idea that leads the article!

Quote
Bush said his "tears will be flowing" on Saturday, when the Navy commissions its newest aircraft carrier as the U.S.S. George H.W. Bush in honor of the former president, who was once the Navy's youngest pilot.

"It's very emotional to me and it's kind of the last big thing in my life," reflected Bush, who was shot down in the South Pacific during World War II. "This brings back a lot of memories. I mean, my going into the Navy at a young age was probably the best thing I ever did in my life. And then now to be, you might say, rewarded - certainly honored in this way - is just mind boggling."

I guess H.W. forgot to mention that he and his son aren't presidential rivals because his son is about a thousand years too soon to out-perform most dog catchers.

He ALWAYS wanted Jeb to be the one to become President.  Jeb was the non-fuckup.

As the article mentions, Jeb wants to run for Senate, and he could very well succeed -- he was a popular governor, and Florida's one of the few states where his name WON'T hurt his chances.

As for the Presidency?  Voters have short memories, but I think it'll be a LONG time before the stench of failure comes off the Bush name.

Would it be worth another 4 years of that shit just to be able to look back and say "Yes, they were all shit"?

The problem is that everyone looks better when compared to W.  I mean, seriously, I have a WHOLE lot more appreciation for HW now than I did a decade ago.  There's a lot to hate about him, but he wasn't a moron, he understood the importance of diplomacy and moderation, and he didn't follow Saddam back into Iraq.  He's still the second-best President of my lifetime.  (For another few weeks.)

Bush's final press conference.  It actually comes off as the closest thing to an apology he's allowed to give.  I think he'll be as glad when it's all fucking over as everybody else.

Bush declares Jan 18th "Sanctity of Human Life Day"

It's about painting abortion as evil. War is still okay, though.

EDIT: Does this mean Omar Khadr is getting out of Gitmo?

Does this mean Omar Khadr is getting out of Gitmo?

Only country to have abandoned a naturalized citizen to Gitmo? Canada.

Only country to avoid signing off on the UN Resolution against the Gaza free-for-all? Canada.

Canada: Apathetic white people who haven't given a fuck about you since 1867.
