They shouldn't be making a Toy Story 3 ever if we're lucky.  The first was my favorite for years, and I watched it more times than I can count.  The second I only saw twice, but that's only because I just never cared to buy it.  I didn't like it as well because it's much more depressing and if I want to feel sad while watching a film, I'll go watch fucking Boogie Nights or Requiem for a Dream or something, geez.

And yet!

I'm not entirely sure why it is that a Toy Story 3 is seen as an inherently terrible thing.  I mean, Pixar has yet to make a bad movie.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

I seem to remember trailers for TS2 looking bad... I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.

I dunno, hitting both the 'target character gets a reset and forgets who they are' plus 'hilarious cultural stereotype!' seems like a red flag to me. Pixar haven't made any bad movies, sure, but they've made some that are merely okay.

Anyway, I'm not going to play doom and gloom, I'll just do what I always do when I'm not sure about a movie: wait for it to come out and see what other people actually have to say after watching it.

I don't remember liking or disliking Toy Story 2, but didn't they make a big deal out of how rare Woody was in that one?  Why is he in a daycare now?  I find this very offensive.

he was super rare but they also made it pretty clear neither the kid nor his mom had any idea what his value was

I dunno, I thought the thing was that the family doesn't know how rare he is.

EDIT: Dreth beat me to it.

In any case, the thought comes to mind that this movie is going to retrace thematic ground that the second already did, with the you grow up things change, love and loss, etc. Which would be kind of a disservice to the second movie.

But again, I'll wait and see what they do.

That makes sense, but I know if I see this movie I'll find it insanely frustrating.

It looks like a mashup of the first and second without any particularly new material (I know, that preview doesn't really show enough for me to make that call but whatevs).  Buzz is an asshole who nobody likes but they want to convert, and they need to find their way back to what's-his-name.

If he really loved his toys, they would have had the same fate as my Real Ghostbusters... played with until they fell apart beyond repair.

Actually doing that as a Toy Story movie would be hilariously grim.

Basically predicting that this movie will be terrible involves, by all of your own admissions, contradicting 14 years of empirical evidence.  So no, I'm not going to predict Toy Story 3 will be bad.

I can however predict that I'll continue to not be excited about it.

The Velveteen Rabbit is horribly depressing but still a classic.

And I'm not predicting that it will be bad or good, I am just not crazy about the series altogether so I don't see myself caring much about this one.  Whatever it was about the first one that people loved wasn't quite there for me.

Re: Pop Cultural References in Toy Story 2: There was also a Jurassic Park reference and some other reference that was so benign I have already forgotten what it was like an hour later.  But damn, those movies really do look spectacular in 3-D, and I still love them both so much that picking a favorite would be impossible.

I think most of the dread regarding Toy Story 3 is an emotional memory of when it was originally announced during the Disney / Pixar split, where Disney immediately decided to make Toy Story 3 without Pixar's talent (in both senses of the word, presumably).  Otherwise, what Brent said.  Except that I am super excited for it because I am pretty much excited for every Pixar movie that doesn't have Cars in the title (and even Cars wasn't bad, once I finally saw it.  As the only Pixar movie I never saw in the theater, I might still catch the sequel when it comes out.)

Also it's just kind of ensaddening that they can make a third Toy Story but can't give us an Incredibles sequel.
