Except for the one who made it.  He kind of had something to do with it.

Good thing we constructed Kayin out of clay and placed the holy symbol for life upon his forehead.

oh wait, no, he's his own person who barely comes here.  my b.  guess we can't take responsibility for any of it.

Um.  I just wanted to add, I like Zara's Eversion (Since everyone else has drifted off course).  It was fun, it was short, and now I keep expecting all platformers to go horrible.

The goomba slides up to Mario, eyes somehow plucked from the head, blood flowing gently from the sockets and speaks forth, "WHY CANT I SEE MARIO?", waddling towards him as even greater masses of similar creatures gather in the background.

"I'm sorry Mario, but the princess.....  Don't look.  Just don't look."  Then it turns out the flesh like castle you've traveled through to get here is the mutated living remains of Peach.

Thanks to Eversion, I expect things like this in all platformers.  THE GRIM DARKNESS OF PLATFORMING.

Okay, tell you what.  If I ever do a thing, and enlist Friday and Niku to help, and feed pretty much directly off your support for several months, when it's done and other people start hearing about it, I'll make sure to turn around and tell you to go fuck yourself.  Happy?

80% of indie devs probably think that's an awesome idea and are leaping at their laptops to cook it up.

Please do!

I'm annoyed that everybody pops up and goes "One of us made this game!"  Well, Kayin's his own damn guy and I didn't make anything and I am not taking any credit whatsoever for his work and nobody else should either.

ABSOLUTES.

Kayin is apart of the community. A parcel of the community were instrumental in the initial creation & promotion. I've a similar distaste for reaping credit for that of which is not earned, but Pyoko, #FF, Niku, Patito, Sharkey, Zaratustra, Friday, and Kemru are all in the credits.

So basically, Kazz, the sum total of this community is not zero.  You and me, certainly, but not this community.

Isn't that a bonus?

(Although I do detest the thing Kayin made IWBTG on, yeah.)

My point was not that we played no part in the creation of the thing. I mean, shit, I remember playing it when Mike Tyson was the end of the game. But that hardly translates into internet 'clout' like someone was asserting. This community may have been the breeding grounds but it had very little to do with the game's eventual popularity.

I mean unless you count Sharkey pimping it on that one podcast. You know, the one that nobody listens to except us.

So instead of complaining that we have no clout, he went and made it popular anyway.  Good for him.

I don't even know what you're trying to say.  Kayin used other communities to spread the word on his game?  That's what I was implying.  Things don't become popular in a vacuum.  If it wasn't us, it was some other group, and I don't fault him for going to a place that has more clout.

I think the real reason Verge won is that it was dramatically easier. Eversion was thematically superior, but it was sufficiently hard that you had to have a real reason to grind away at it. John Q. Public who doesn't know Eversion's hook or know about Zara's games isn't going to have the patience to try and play a difficult platformer with no apparent reward; the subtlety of the everting mechanic is a big part of what makes the game so great, but it's also part of why it's so hard to get people to actually play it.
