Phil Harrison: "I would love to turn Ghostbusters into a $100m franchise, just to prove him (Activision-Blizzard CEO, Bobby Kotick) wrong."

I have now found myself rooting for Phil Harrison & Atari. MASS HYSTERIA.

It's a weird goddam day when Atari turns out to be the underdog taking a stab at monolithic Activision.

Game & Blu-Ray confirmed for June 16th release.

No word on GBII, the bastard child that still continues to bring in cable revenue.

Have never understood the hate for GB2.  Is it inferior to the first film?  Without a doubt.  But it still has the Statue of Liberty being turned into a giant mecha with nothing more than pink jell-o and the greatest controller ever made.

The Playstation controller is the greatest controller ever made.

Nintendo just made all those games you're nostalgic for.

As it turns out, the SNES controller is near-useless for 3D games, and the DualShock is too clunky for 2D games.  So it kind of boils down to what you happen to be playing.

(The PS1 controller is just the worst of both worlds, though it did pioneer the oh-so-comfortable handle grip.)

The $20 Advantages on sale @ MAGFest were pristine, while some of the SNES-era plastic had gone yellow & green.

Have never understood the hate for GB2.

Dismissive, nonconstructive hate at that. Murray finally came clean about his own dislike for the film recently:

Quote from: SlashFilm
I think the wounds from Ghostbusters 2 have healed, Murray joked, the crowd errupting in laughter. “And supposedly they have hired two guys from The Office to write a script. So that could work. I think that’s a good idea to get a fresh look at… I always liked the characters. The characters are fun. And we did have a lot of fun making the movie. The first one was really a lot of fun to make. And I think the first 45 minutes of Ghostbusters is about as fun as a movie gets.

We didn’t have a lot of special effects in it. There were just a couple. It was just the funny characters in that world, and I like that movie because of it. The first movie had like 60 plate shots. The second movie had like hundreds. Those guys got their hands on the script early, and it was GONE. It went away. It was hard to wrangle because it was tied all around the effects without the story or the characters coming first. So, they are hard movies to write, and Dan really caught it with that first one.

Fair enough. Carbon-copy script treatment aside, the dialogue is equally as quotable.

I always saw it as a TMNT2 to 1 thing.  The sequel is sillier to the point of absurdity, but if you can get yourself in the right sort of mindframe it's equally as enjoyable.

A very different thing as being equally as good, mind you, but still as enjoyable.

I'd say it's not QUITE the same -- TMNT 2 falls into the "so bad it's good" MST frame of mind, whereas Ghostbusters 2 is, for my money, still pretty good.  The plot IS identical to the first movie's, but the dialogue's great and impeccably delivered by Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis in their prime -- and let's not forget Hudson, Moranis, Potts, and MacNicol.  (Weaver's mostly there as a foil for Murray, but she does a great job at that.)

And, yes, the Statue of Liberty scene is fucking awesome.

I've always considered it one of the better sequels I've seen over the years; not on the same level as the first, but I've never really understood the hate, either.

I didn't know I was supposed to hate it.   :nyoro~n:

When the hell did it become common knowledge that it was supposed to be bad?
