And no, it's not time consuming. It literally takes maybe a three minutes to create a selection outlining even a large complex object with the pen tool

As opposed to one click's worth of time per area? You are either trolling or just unfamiliar with livepaint.

Yes. I am obviously the one who is trolling because I called your hackneyed, lazy, automated system of coloring and inking stupid. And ugly. And you've never once posted anything to contradict my assessment. In fact, quite the opposite: even your best drawings look lazy and hackneyed. And ugly.

I digress, you're a turd, and your avatar is ugly. Just like your art.

Drraaammmaaaaaaaaa

I'll find out if there's anything special I can do with Sai to quickly colour in areas, there's gotta be a "Fill according to above layer" type option.

in order for it to be drama i would have to give half a shit

OMG The ultimate insult!!!! All my investment, all my anger, everything I've felt regarding the situation has been rendered petty and pathetic! I AM UNDONE

Anyway,

I'll find out if there's anything special I can do with Sai to quickly colour in areas, there's gotta be a "Fill according to above layer" type option.

Again: what you're asking literally makes no sense to me. I suspect it might have something to do with the fact that you're using Sai, while all my suggestions have to do with Adobe Photoshop, but I can't imagine the two programs being THAT different.

Can you show me the problem you're having?

DNi and Stush, I remembered something last night about photoshop.

Guild's Easy Paint-By-Numbers Guide

Step 1: Make sure the linework is finished and ready for coloring.
Step 2: Make three layers named LINEWORK, LINEWORK AREAS and COLORS and put a copy of the linework in LINEWORK and in LINEWORK AREAS. Leave COLORS blank.
Step 3: Turn off the visibility of LINEWORK.
Step 4: Fill an area of LINEWORK AREAS with pink using the paint bucket, then use the COLOR RANGE option under the SELECT dropdown to create a selection of just that area.
Step 5: Refine the edge to increase the selection by a pixel all around the edges. This is done with an option under the SELECT dropdown, I believe.
Step 6: On the COLORS layer, fill the selection with color. At this point you can also shade the selection with a brush on a very low hardness. Note that you won't be able to see this layer at this point unless you temporarily turn off LINEWORK AREAS visibility while working.
Step 7: Repeat steps 4 through 6 until all areas are colored, then delete LINEWORK AREAS and overlay it with LINEWORK.

All of this is somewhat dependent on your line thickness being a bit more substantial, Stush, so try looking into overlaying your sketches in illustrator with the brush tool and a custom brush shaped like a football.

With this method, you didn't have to manually select the area with a selection tool, saving hours of work on a large image. Magnetic lasso is damned annoying to work with, as anyone who uses it knows, and the other option is to zoom way in and do it by hand which is also extremely time-consuming.

Less shitheaded answer than my post above: Look guys, there are a million tutorials and a million different ways of doing things in Photoshop. It's art. Do what you're comfortable with and what provides the best product for you. If you're not sure what produces the best results, then try a bunch of different things until you have an idea of the method you like. If you become dissatisfied with your current methods, try something else. If you don't want to try a bunch of different things, then maybe art isn't for you.

Just remember one thing: Art is the one time the phrase "The ends justify the means" is wholly defensible and totally appropriate. Well, uh, unless you're outright copying or something.

IM, has anyone ever told you that platitudes are stupid, annoying, uslesess and almost always wrong?

Stay out of our discussion if you're just finding ways to shut us up please.

Hey it's time for mooooooore FACES yaaaaaay I can't seem to draw anything else.

Which I suppose wouldn't be so bad if I could do it with any modicum of consistency. First: another Alana. You can tell it's her because of the green skin and white hair, and not, y'know, her facial structure or anything like that.

That aside, I like how this one came out. After Buge mentioned

kyaaaaaROW skeeeeurrrrROW

I suddenly felt the urge to experiment with it, as up until now I've actually been shying away from using straight up black in my computer coloring. Also: fuck yeah, Hair texture.

Next up: Oracle, a psuedo-immortal, borg-esque techno-cultist from the same world as Alana that I didn't bother finishing.

I didn't like where I was going with it when I abandoned it, but looking at it now I kind of like it. Unfortunately, I only saved a flattened JPG of it, so there really isn't any going back to finish it.

And finally: this thing.

Started off as another attempt at Oracle, but I sort of gave up on that during the inking process when it started looking kind of... down syndromey. So I switched to light oranges and reds for his/her skin and I ended up really liking the colors.

I'm pretty sure that's the face of a guy who walks around his house dressed like horse.

I know from living with my ex for so long that drawing too many faces can be super dangerous. She has pages and pages of just FACES, like 30 a page. Don't let it happen to you :(

I used to draw lots of faces, still hasn't made me any good at them! But I still start with them when I draw. That's why I have a lot of heads in my drawing pads.

I did this last night, unfortunately the pic was a few centimeters bigger than A4 size so I couldn't get it all in the scan. I really can't draw guns on an angle, or anything made of metal.

I'm gonna look into the stuff you guys mentioned but I'll probably end up sticking with what I do, it may take a long time, but it's easy, it's like colouring in with pencil, which I like, I don't like making it too complicated! I'm not super smart like all you dudes, I prefer to keep my colouring as complex as colouring in with crayons or whatever.

But i'll fire up my photoshop and illustrator and see what I can do.

Her waistline looks really thin in this one. Dunno why. I went back and looked at previous ones and the proportion isn't too different.

Maybe it is because I'm insane.

Nah, it's probably a thinner waistline than I usually draw! I'm just playing around with different ways of drawing people, really.

DID SOMEONE ORDER A POORLY-SCANNED, HALF-FINISHED SKETCH OR TWO?

This was for a class, but it wasn't required to be colored.  First order of business if I ever get around to finishing it is to fix the crappy attempt at shading on the underside of the belly (also all the smudge marks from my sweaty hands).  Maybe one day I'll actually invest in a tablet.

Also Stush I like your wimminz
