Just another attempt at a sketch from a photo. I like how it came out, except I have a bit of trouble with the head shape. I made it too small originally, and then I had to adjust a lot to match the features.

feels like you're not only being too cautious, but too cautious in the wrong way. Next time you do a sketch from a reference, do it freehand with a pen.

I did it freehand. What other way could I Do it? I don't have a weird drawing machine.

But with a pen? That sounds terrifying. It'd be a mass of corrected lines.

It's supposed to be terrifying. If it wasn't, it wouldn't build your confidence. But to give you an example of what a finished product looks like: http://tweets.copicmarker.com/tweets/224240331577769985

You can see how he used a light pen to build his framework and then used thicker pens to beef up the shadows and heavy lines.

The point of the exercise is developing the ability to get what your eye sees (or your brain, if you're working from imagination) onto paper with efficiency and not worry about making mistakes, because mistakes are going to happen anyway.

What buge said, also

I did it freehand. What other way could I Do it? I don't have a weird drawing machine.

I meant no construction lines.

Get a black sharpie, and just start sketching what you see.

I wouldn't go with a sharpie. Just a ballpoint pen.

I thought that maybe I had gotten better at drawing and gotten over this goddamn artist's block bullshit, but nope, I can't draw again, no matter how much I try. Everything I draw ends up looking crappy. I can't figure out why, what the hell's changed since last month, When I was able to draw with like a 99% success rate?

A friend suggested I do a halloween sketch, It's sort of crappy, but with how drawing's been going lately, I'm glad just to be making stuff!

I've been sketching at work lately, it seems like it's a LOT easier when I get away from my computer, can any other artists comment on that? Do you guys tend to do your drawing away from it? Or is it fine to be sitting at it?

With the exception of when I'm training myself to color/ink on my tablet, I can't get anything done in front of the computer. Sometimes I'll listen to a LP or a podcast and draw in the same room as my computer, but "within earshot of my speakers" is about as close as I get when I have a pencil in my hand.

I did a bunch of inking over the last couple of days.

Dang, nice. The left arm seems a little stiff, but I'm liking your color choices. If the greens were even just a bit lighter it'd be kinda hokey, but this scheme really works well.

I hear stuff like that a lot, which seems pretty weird to me. Because I seriously have no idea what i'm doing with colours, I just make it up as I go along.

Ha, it's nice to just have good instinct about things without thinking too much every once in a while.

I think here it works because you strike a good balance. The grays, greens and browns you picked seem brighter than what I'd mentally associate with military clothing, but they're not blatantly cartoony either; it's like they're lively and sober at the same time. Feels like good guy clothes. I'm not sure how to detail the impression. The wrong shade of blue could easily have looked jarring and out of place but, I don't know, you somehow managed to pick one that fits in!
