Same pose, a little more depth to her left leg so it doesn't look like she's got no hips. SLIGHTLY more depth.

It looks a little weird, but the pose itself isn't wrong/bad/unnatural. I think it's just that we're getting mixed depth cues.

Wow. Okay. So: turns out that I kind of drew myself into a corner. I would have just... loved to, you know, redraw her foot and shin only with only minor recoloring. But, feet are kind of the support that hold up the rest of the fucking body, and there really wasn't a way to to actually do that without fucking up the rest of her posture. So yeah: drew in and colored a whole new leg.

A leg I'm not entirely certain that I'm going to keep on her because it kind of looks terrible. I don't know yet. I might be able to change her hand there and make it so that she's leaning on something.

You might want to re-examine her legs and/or hip. Her left foot is flat on the ground and she's balancing on the ball of her right foot. Her hip should be dipping to her left or her legs will be mismatched. Also, leveling her shoulders would keep her from looking like she's going to topple over.

Addendum: A good way to avoid calamities like this is to rough out, in order: torso-legs-arms-head.

He did that at first I think, but he wanted to show off a full toe extension?

I thought one of the traces in his rough sketching put her left leg at the right proportions anyway. If he wants to rearrange the feet he's going to have to realign the hips, which has the left hip behind the right hip by a fair margin.

It reminds me a little bit of a ballet pose. Or would, if she had her arms up.

I'm just going to go ahead and throw the picture in the abandoned file. It's way too much of a pain in the ass to make a picture look good if the foundation is off. I suppose I could still "save it" if redrew the legs, but honestly, I don't much care for the face, so the only part of that drawing left worth saving is the chest.

So yeah, this was a learning experience.

What did you learn?

People don't stand on their tippy-toes unless they're 8 or doing ballet?

I was going to say "make absolutely certain that your drawing is functional and solid before committing to deeper detail"

But yours works too.

Just one thing that I don't think has been mentioned yet: Always be conscious of how a figure's weight rests and (if the figure's in motion), where it's placing it's weight. Someone standing in that pose would be falling over or have to correct their stance almost immediately.

Figure drawing how to find the weight

Obviously, choosing the nose as the center of gravity is going to fail for some poses... and the nearer you are to a profile, the more you skew its rule-of-thumb-ability. There's probably a correction you can do for profiles by putting the source of the ray deeper into the head, but I don't know where.

I think the center of gravity for the "average" adult human hangs out a few inches behind their solar plexus, but I haven't studied anatomy formally and informally I'm out of practice by like... 8 years? No wonder I'm so damned fat.

If you're really having that much trouble, Michael's sells these little mini-mannequins to use as a reference for posing.

This applies to serial killing as well.

I did this last night while watching The Delta Force, She's supposed to be standing on the top of a seat in a jeep, it didn't look so good, But I think I know the problem! The arms are wonky, so if I fix them, it won't be too horrible!

Right idea, wrong product. The wooden ones are TERRIBLE for posing. They have springs inside that force the figure out of whatever pose you're trying, and they don't even bend all the way. Art S. Buck has a slightly more articulated and detailed figure, but its proportions are kind of weird. Your best reference is a mirror.

Yeah, those mannequins are a nice idea in theory, but a dangerous trap in practice.

Whew! I bought one some years ago and got zero use out of it, so I'm glad to see the problem isn't in my brain for once.

I used a Power Ranger figure. That's fine if whatever your drawing has the proportions of a Power Ranger figure.
