Ron Paul: My Dream
« on: January 16, 2008, 10:27:55 AM »

So, despite a blimp and a march through World of Warcraft, and stormfront and vdare and all other sorts of crazy things, now here attacks on Paul are mostly coming from Republican-leaning sources, and yet the more they piss Paul's fanatics off and make him think he's getting a raw deal, the more likely he'll be inclined to spend his millions in donations on an independent run.

Please god let this happen. This country needs a Ross Perot with even more crazy.

Ron Paul is scary because his policies are absolutely batshit and if he runs indie, there's a solid chance he could play spoiler for whatever dem gets the nomination.

Exactly.

Plus, imagine the collective BOOM of all the nation's Paulbots exploding when they realize what they done gone did.

He's obviously not taking anyone who likes God, Mormos, War, high-bracket tax cuts, military, kickbacks, NAFTA, etc.  Which afaik is a large portion of the non-Dem party.

This blog was adorable. However, I think my favorite part of the whole deal was humorless Ron Paul supporters stuffing the poll. It's a force of nature at this point. Leave a poll in a warm dark place for a while and soon enough you'll find it crawling with Ron Paul. Doesn't even have to be online. Hell, write "What is your favorite movie by Alan Parker?" on a slip of paper and leave in in a drawer overnight. The next morning you'll find "Ron Paul" written on it followed by a page of tally marks.

The only exception to this rule is any poll that might be an actual election.

Yeah, just like you see Ralph Nader supporters whipping themselves on the street for giving the -last- election to the republicans.

What, Dick Cheney vs. The Only Bigger Douchebag on the Planet Except for his Running Mate?

I wouldn't have a beef with Ron Paul if he and his cronies kept out of my business, but apparently most of my contacts and clients right now seem to be just full of justifications as to why I should be nodding yes to everything he says.

Yeah, just like you see Ralph Nader supporters whipping themselves on the street for giving the -last- election to the republicans.

Um, I assume you mean 2000.  Nader didn't get shit in '04.

I hate retreading this crap, but a quick review of why I think the "it's all Nader's fault" bullshit is bullshit:

1. Any reasonable recount shows Gore won Florida.

2. The "if Nader hadn't run Gore would have gotten enough votes that they wouldn't have needed a recount" argument is pure conjecture.  I find it very easy to believe Jeb, Harris, et al would have found another way to rig Florida if not for Nader.

3. If Gore had run a competent campaign, he never would have been close.  Blaming Nader gives Gore a free pass for picking Lieberman as a running-mate, ignoring his core issue, spending the debates agreeing with everything Bush said, and all the other incredible mistakes he made over the course of 2000.  If Gore had carried his home state, Florida wouldn't have mattered.

The draw of third-party candidates is simple: lots of people are fed up with the two major parties.  And they have a point -- bitch about Bush all you want, but feel free to tell me what fucking good the Democrats have done to stand up to him since taking Congress a year ago.

There are a number of problems which stop third-party candidates from being viable.  The all-or-nothing electoral college is one.  (Perot got zero electoral votes.)  The rules of the Presidential Debates are another.  (Perot was not allowed back in '96.)  And when you get someone like Nader, Bloomberg, or Buchanan, it's pretty obvious support is going to come from one side of the political spectrum over the other, votes people see as "rightfully" belonging to the Democratic or Republican nominee.  (I see that argument as horseshit; a candidate has to EARN my vote, and is not simply entitled to it.)  Paul's a little trickier to pin down.

I personally think we need to start seeing some viable third-party candidates, on both sides, and that that's the only way out of our current stagnation.  But damned if I can think of a formula to MAKE a third-party candidate viable.

Let it be said that I have no delusions that Ron Paul himself is an outright racist.

As with many other politicians, however, he has no qualms with garnering support from those who are. That said, he is likely evicting her from his suddenly "No Medicare" retirement home.

Look at the demographics of his supporters. That'll give you a good idea of precisely whom he'll spoil.

So zero chance of seeing Green Arrow in office this year, then.

Yeah, I think Ron Paul's supporters are doing a good enough job of spoiling his chances that he doesn't need much more help other than being who he is.

The source website uses phrases such as 'money bombs' and 'sign blitzes', further raising my suspicion that his campaign is run by overzealous marketing majors.

Tangent: I am curious as to what's up with your use of Russian.  Is it just to go with the theme?

Because you look JUST LIKE a dude I know who married a Russian woman.

Uh, yeah, actually, it's just to go with the theme.

Between my avatar, and this thread, I've used 2 out the 5 things in Russian I know how to say.

I am married, but my wife is a Texan, not a Russian.
