I like my tea like I like my women. Hot and Japanese.

Okay, so I just strained my first attempted batch of cold brew coffee.

Yes, plz.

Tried it first with nothing in it (except ice cubes), and it was good. I added some milk mostly out of habit. It's less bitter, and more of the other flavors in the beans are evident. Definitely going to be keeping this on hand all summer.

Yeah, it'll keep in the fridge for over a week and it seems magically resistant to contamination from other food smells and such. I like it a lot. It doesn't taste the same as any of the traditional hot methods of brewing and it's much easier on the stomach, both aspects that are really neat. I like the acidity and strongness of something like french press or drip, so I can say that I enjoy both styles pretty much equally, just for different reasons.

I don't do french press very often unless I'm doing it with my portable plastic press in a work environment. I can't seem to get consistant results with it. I think I need more practice and probably a better grinder. My manual drip I have down and never fuck up so that's my go to method in the home.

One and the same.

I've tried a bunch of "natural" or "gourmet" hot chocolates. They're all either just disappointingly bitter, or have a weird citrus or minty taste.

Dunkin' Donuts and Swiss Miss are the champs.

My wife does this all the time. She has a big sun tea jug in the back of the fridge filled with extra strong cold brew coffee. I think she uses this recipe.

The good stuff, or the packets of flavoured sweetener?

The funny thing is that in US she bought Swiss Miss low-sugar version, but since they don't have that here, she buys Selection low-sugar, which is the crappy house brand from Food Basics of all places.

But she's actually bought low-sugar stuff that costs three times as much name brand, specialty stuff, etc, but she says somehow that cheap stuff tastes better than any of the others she's bought (other than stuff in a restaurant/coffee house etc., but you're not making that at home).

When I make cocoa, I make it from cocoa powder, milk, vanilla extract, and sugar in a pot on the stove. Trust me, it's better than Swiss Miss.

I want to do this.  Any recommendation on specific coffees?

What I read recommended medium roast. I wouldn't use anything super expensive since you're using so much of it, but neither Maxwell House. Specifically, I'm using Sweetwaters' House Blend but I think that's regional to Michigan.

It really works with anything. Definitely don't use cheap crappy stuff, but if you do want to use expensive stuff it can be great because cold brew brings out the flavors so cleanly. For a while I was using a different single-origin every week and the differences came out clearer than with any other brewing method.

Last weekend a friend made me Turkish coffee, and I rather liked it. Then I bought an ibrik and tried to do it myself, and it tasted crap. There is apparently some technique lacking here. For the record, I did get extra finely ground coffee.
