I was planning to keep my CRT for exactly that purpose, but it's kinda fuckhuge and my new place is too damned small for that.  Has anybody started making high-end but tiny CRTs for this kind of thing yet?

Yeah, after five years of helping move my 32" CRT to and from dorms twice a year my grandmother finally told me she'd buy me a flat panel just because she was sick of dealing with it.  I would certainly not own a 32" CRT today.  Anything over 30 lbs, forget about it (which generally rules out S-Video, but I always hated those stupid fucking connectors with their EZ-Bend pins anyway).

This thing fits easily in my arms, doesn't weigh enough to strain my back, and doesn't take up enough room that I'd have to seriously plan around it the next time I move.

Has anybody started making high-end but tiny CRTs for this kind of thing yet?

I think high-end is exactly what we don't want; NES games may look better on a hi-res CRT than on a hi-res LCD, but they still look pretty crummy.

Now, if you start talking about fancy European shit like the SNES SCART adapter, that's another story, but that's hardcore-enthusiast stuff with a niche-of-a-niche-of-a-niche audience.  I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a burgeoning market like that start to rise up (especially in Japan), like how vinyl records are selling better now than they have in 20 years, but I don't think we're there yet.

(I'd like to make the argument that nobody will ever be nostalgic for VHS, but I've seen enough people sing the praises of the Clone Saga to know that no matter how legitimately goddamn awful something is, a few years down the road there will be people looking back on it with unironic fondness.)

(Also, the Clone Saga looks better in hindsight because it was a much less stupid way of getting Peter Parker's marriage out of the way than the one we finally got.)

(And it was, of course, still fucking stupid.)

In music circles, it's becoming trendy for people to want to pick up cassette tapes.

Welp, this is my last night at my ma's. Can't wait to be done with the whole moving thing, it's been more than long enough in many ways.

Then the next step is to take that "place to live" and turn it into "home".

Heyyyyyy, I'm back.

...has it only been two days? Wow. I guess it has. Alright then, back to trying to figure out why the exhaust tube for my drier won't fit in the wall port.

Wait, that's the wrong question. I already know the answer to that one: this building is like 60 years old.

And for this latest installment of "now François lives on his own which is new and exciting to him but is probably trivial and boring to everyone on these boards who have been in this situation since forever":

So I'm asking my brother what he's been eating since I've started leaving.

-Tuna.
-Tuna what?
-Just tuna.
-Err, alright. What about mom?
-She had some canned soup once I think, but mostly she's been eating out.

WELL WELL WELL LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE BEEN GETTING ALONG FINE WITHOUT YOUR LIVE-IN BUTLER HUH

WONDER HOW LONG IT'S GONNA TAKE Y'ALL TO MISS THE BOEUF BRAISÉ AND THE SHALLOT ROAST AND THOSE DELICIOUS MFING LEMON-PEPPER FAJITAS AND EVERYTHING ELSE I COOKED FOR YOU THESE PAST EIGHT YEARS, SUMBITCHES

so this is schadenfreude eh

is nice

There's no greater gratification than starving your family to death.

Jesus I'm not even in the same league as R^2. It is like I'm at the bottom of Mount Everest and I take my binoculars and look up and up and up and I'm worried because R^2's not at the summit but I keep looking up and up and up and whew false alarm everybody he's on the moon haha what business did I have to think he'd stay within the confines of the atmosphere.

Also it's not like my family's starving starving. They just gotta eat bullshit little food until they realize exactly how much they took for granted. And then they'll need to pick up the slack for themselves or keep eating bullshit little food forever.

In some form or another, your name is Francois.

I don't care if the most you can cook is velveeta mac & cheese, I want a Goddamn Chef that I can call Francois.

At the risk of ruining something awesome here for someone, I don't think R^2 has enough self respect to reject an arbitrary renaming.

He'll need to change his last name to keep that wonderful alliteration though.  I suggest Francois LeFrance.

I can tell you from experience that yes, some people are still nostalgic for VHS. Said people are incredibly stupid.

Went to the beer store to buy cheapass 6-pack (relatives coming tomorrow). $12, but they were out. So I figured okay, get the 12-pack. Turns out there was a deal on the 12 pack, making it a much better per-bottle price, $20.

Then the clerk pointed out that the 15-pack was only 45 cents more. Like okay, I am not a man to let a clerk upsell me, but even I'm not stupid enough to turn down 15-cent beer.

Now I have lots of beer!
