Does this move Parish and Sharkey up in the ranks?

Parish was already Editor of Ill-Defined Content, as I recall.

Condolences.  Here's to everything working out for the unfortunate, the economy picking up again, and the future integrity and stability of game publications.

I hope whoever loses their job can find similar work. Or is this one of those instances where it doesn't happen like that?

Depends on which guys you're talking about, but I think given the job market right now, even the big names might have trouble getting a job right away.

Nah, the entertainment industry doesn't take as big a hit during a derecessopression.  They're sure to get new offers due to their name recognition, but it's not guaranteed to be jobs they'll like.

I'm not so sure, personally. The enthusiast press hasn't seemed particularly strong lately

Well, entertainment press is kind of a bastard child of entertainment; just because you want to go see a movie to forget how much your life sucks doesn't mean you want to buy a copy of TV Guide so you can schedule your sucky life around escapism.

And then there's the whole "print is dead" thing.

In general, magazines have been doing very well for the past few years and have been pretty much completely insulated from the problems plaguing newspapers (Don't have my numbers anymore but this was from several Doctors of Communication).

That said, video game news reporting is probably the exception that proves that rule, since like tech news it's obsolete before you even think about printing it and unlike tech news video game magazines are intended to be read by people who play video games, unlike PC World or some shit which is intended to be read by someone who pretends he thinks he knows how to access his Internet Explorer on his Office 2007 OS.

Especially with the increasing penetration of broadband making online screenshots a much better option and not even counting video.

Given that video game sales are still pretty good despite the recession, hopefully they can.

I'm sure that comment wasn't directed at you, Sharkey. What's your take on it?

Shark,

Sora IM'ed me to make sure you still had a job.  Even the people we tell to go away are pulling for you.

Assuming the last EGM made it to press before the decision was made.  That's a real pity; a magazine like that doesn't deserve to go out without a chance to say goodbye.

So that leaves, what, GamePro left out of the old guard?  Well, and Nintendo Power, of course.

According to Milkman, the final issue of EGM was more or less completed and will see the light of day in some form, likely digitally.

So bummed about this. I'm happy that Sharkey and Parish didn't get axed, but I feel like they're probably not in rosy situations, either. Dag yo.

Quote from: Shane Bettenhausen
... For now, please know that my decision to leave 1up magically coincided with the big UGO deal that's currently galvanizing 1up into something new, unique, and hopefully still awesome. I'd decided to broaden my horizons and venture into unexplored areas during the holidays...and the news today helped me to cement my choice. Please don't worry about me: I already have a new gig lined up in the not-too-distant future that's still 100% dedicated to gaming...

All the same, Shane's firing was a colossal mistake. He's a walking gaming encyclopedia fer fucks sake.

Oh, to be sure, and I cried myself to sleep at the thought that he might not be on whatever husk remains of 1up Yours...

...but all the same, I gotta say I really want to know what his "unexplored areas" are. If Jeff Green and Shawn Elliot are any indication, he's being hired by some developer... but I'm hoping it's something more interesting than that.

Developers hiring game journalists produce interesting enough results.   :wuv:

There's still Game Informer and possibly Tips & Tricks too, though I can't remember when the latter started.

Game Informer might be even more of a biased rag than NP, though.
