They're literally giving EGM subscriptions away at this point.  I actually got one.  Saw it advertised on Joystiq, figured it was one of those damn "give us a credit card and we'll renew it without asking you" scams (which reminds me, I need to get Barnes and Noble to refund me that membership card renewal -- $30 a year to get a discount that puts their prices only SLIGHTLY above Amazon's, what a crock), but when I found out they didn't even ask for a credit card I took it.  Don't know how they expected to support it -- maybe they thought the ad revenue was enough, or maybe they counted on people renewing next year.

The drawbacks of a monthly magazine are obvious -- no video, no up-to-the-minute news.  They still hold some of their best features for the print edition, but I can't really understand why.

I got this month's EGM in the mail today.  On the cover?  Splatterhouse.

I mean, all right, you take the cover feature you can get, and Splatterhouse was the one they had the material to spin into a 7-page feature.  They already did their GTA4 cover, and their two-page Mario Kart review which has been up on 1up for 2 weeks already doesn't justify a cover story either.  But seriously, when your big May cover story is Splatterhouse, that doesn't bode well.

UGO in high-level talks to buy 1UP; EGM not part of deal.

UGO? Really? REALLY? Death knell for EGM, I'd imagine... but hopefully 1up will exist unscathed.

Well, fuck.

I hope this doesn't negatively impact the star ensemble cast of the podcasts. I need the special brand of hyperbole that only Shane Bettenhausen can provide to get me through the weekend.

1UP/EGM purchased, dismantled, shat upon by UGO. Ostensibly, 30 or so people were laid off, including Shane Bettenhausen, Andrew Pfister, most/all Gamevideos staff; also, ostensibly, all podcasts are dead and gone.

Thanks for providing a link so we can easily read the details ourselves.

Well, I didn't see our toothsome friend on there, so that's SOME good news at least. Wonder if the old boy has any comments that we'll see.

So...does Sharkey still have a job? I don't see his name on the list.

This is not really how I expected the day to go.

For those who have asked, though, I'm still with 1UP. Thanks for your concern, but I'd rather you wish the best for everyone who wasn't so fortunate instead. Go consume some hard liquor for us.

Done and done. And I mean done.

I was really hoping that 1up being sold wouldn't mean massive layoffs.... damn it

And the podcasts? God damn, isn't nixing those against the Geneva Convention?

At this point Sharkey might be better off jumping ship.  :sadpanda:

Everyone that makes 1up what is was gets fired in the wake of UGO buyout

Gosh, thanks.

In light of the fact that I've somehow failed to be fired, you can take that as sarcasm.

I'm glad you've kept your job, but you've got to admit that, at least from the perspective of the 1up consumer, Shane, Milky, and Garnett (and Jeff Green) really set the tone.

Also sad for me to see those guys finally leave because I was a long time EGM subscriber as a kid. I still have the issues where Shane, Milky, and many other familiar faces that have left over the last year, first joined the Ziff Davis team.
