Oh man, some kind of Shadow Moses Thunderdome would be gassy. Not regularly, but as long as we could all spectate live a one-time event could be pretty damned funny.

I would be all about that!

ONE ON ONE BABY

We could stand to do more arena maps, I suppose.

I notice Niku and Crouton as Spies way more then Doom.  But maybe thats because I'm always trying to be someplace useful.

:wakka:

To be fair I regard all 3 of you as far more useful as demo-men (or other classes)

It's not so much the spies killing me that bothers me anymore.  It's that six members of my team will drop what they're doing to run after the spy.

I absolutely love it when I get five people to chase me halfway across the map while I'm on fire, and when I finally drop they're like "lol no, spy".

Yeah, I learned a long time ago to ignore [whoever] and just go cap the point.

They'll come to you, son. They'll come to you.

The problem is that if you let the spy slip he'll go bother the engineer and then the real troubles begin.

The problem is that on a public server you can't be certain that anyone else on your team knows how to deal with a Spy, especially if he's got a Dead Ringer.

Kayin's Anti Dead Ringer guide:

Don't care. You blew up the spy and you're worried about him being a DR? Why? You should always be ready for spies. He's probably not going to go back after you again anyways. It's going to take him time to re-establish himself. In some situations it may be easier for him to hide and come back right away, but whatever, just pay attention if there are close by places for the spy to immediately hide.

The whole purpose for killing people is it causes a pretty definite set back (returned to spawn, respawn timer, etc). There are OTHER setbacks as well (hurting someone enough to make them retreat to get health). These setbacks aren't usually as big as a real kill and neither is nailing a DR spy. Oh well. He's trading the ability to cloak more freely for the ability to be more harass better. Personally I'm more afraid of invisible spies then DR spies because I can't spycheck what I can't see. The DR spy has to get out of dodge, go and collect ammo or health or even better (for you) wait for a recharge.

The short of it is don't get psyched out by the "HE MAY STILL BE ALIVE" factor. It's an illusionary fear. You ALWAYS should be aware of possible spies. Even if the DR spy didn't have a watch out, that doesn't mean another spy couldn't be coming up behind you anyways.

DR spies have a field day on Shadow Moses because it allows them to harass weaker players better, who are very vulnerable to spies anyways. If Niku is carrying a team as a spy, it's not because he has the DR, it's because he's a good spy.

If you're an engineer your perceptions may be different, but I wouldn't know!

The DR is a good action watch. It's a great escape watch. It's the best "I get accidentally hit in cloak" watch. I think it's on par with the traditional Invisible Watch, akin to a style choice(Kritz vs Uber, Natascha vs Sascha, Scottish Resist vs Sticky Launcher, etc.)

But yeah, constant vigilance always beats a back-stab.

If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself... unless everybody else is thinking the same thing and half the team chases down every Spy.

On some servers, you need to be vigilant on behalf of everyone. But that's what Pyros are for.

Seems like the spy is often more useful as a sacrificial lamb that distracts half a team than he is as some guy who randomly backstabs people every now and then.

Eh, I don't think you should try to intentionally do such things. It's just a pleasant side effect of being chased by people who don't know that the DR recharges really fast and even faster off ammo.

No, but it is exactly what you should be striving for if you get lit on fire or are otherwise trapped in a situation where you can't deal real damage.

You won't ever top the scoreboard by playing distraction alone, but as a dead ringer, it IS a great idea to try to look like a legit threat from the front while moving with other, REAL legit threats.  If they aim for you first, then your teammates get the first advantage of attack in that second or two they spend on you while you get a free GET AROUND TO THEIR BACKS card.  It's win/win.  If I see an enemy heavy revving up toward a soldier, I will absolutely undisguise and try to get on his six because he will then frantically try to cover his back, leaving himself open to rocket pelting while I DR to escape.

I do kinda want to get back to playing with the Invisibility Watch for a while just for the change of pace, but it's true that Random Death can make a spy night infuriating and also that Shadow Moses is absolutely full of delicious, wide backs that have no ears attached to them.

In terms of distraction chasing, you basically need to realize when that's happening and not play into the spy's hands. If you're playing gorge, and you're almost on A and the spy runs towards your spawn and you're NOT in immediate range, let him go. That doesn't mean you don't announce "Spy heading for spawn", because you should always do that too. And if he gets anyone after you've warned folks, well FREE LEARN-TO-SPYCHECK LESSON I guess.

Of course, if you're on defense and have many sentry nests, the correct choice may be a different one. Defensive spies and offensive spies are foiled in different ways.

***

You know, I'd almost be interested in finding out how the good spies here rank us in terms of spychecking.

Like if I had to guess about myself, I'd say I was so-so.

I feel like I've got a pretty good sense of when someone's a spy (call it a feeling). Sometimes I hit but other times my thought pattern goes "Say... come to think of it, I think that guy's a sp-  ah dammit, I was right." thanks to SLOW OF MIND. Or else I'm engie and just lose the melee dual.

I find it's fairly rare that backstabs just happen to me out of the blue where I totally don't see them coming, but it still happens now and again (maybe 1-3 times a night?) but anyway my whole opinion is subjective, so I dunno?

Once I heard a sound behind me of being melee attacked; I turned around to discover that a Spy had gotten a non-critical melee attack from behind. I then died to a facestab.

This is a good story.

Yeah, this would happen a lot more if we rocked the IW more.

Yeah.  The Invisibility Watch cloak basically lasts forever for an even decent-level spy barring running into people/pyros.
