Meh, if you want to go the "Next Rorschach" route, pay attention to the bit where he goes back to his apartment for his spare mask.  Note the tear pattern on the face of the kid whose mother is trying to hide the fact that she's a prostitute from (and Rorschach's reaction to it.)

Also, there's a bit in the police report where they mention that nobody can make heads or tails of Rorschach's handwriting.  :whoops:

...I've been poking at the thing on and off on my breaks.

But the kid at the paper can read it anyway. he reads the first couple sentences, then his editor tells him to throw it on the crank pile.

There's play on symmetry/Rorschach's mask/the smiley face/the Doomsday Clock throughout.  "Next Rorschach" is a bit of a literal interpretation (and a little too V for Vendetta-y).

There are two journals, a coded one he keeps with him and a plainly-written one he keeps under his floorboard with his other belongings.  The police find the former, the New Frontiersman gets the latter.

...it also bears noting that, when Rorschach departs Ozy's base determined to tell the people the truth, Veidt basically shrugs and says nobody's going to believe him.

I finally read this.  I'm not sure how I feel about it.  I liked it.  But I can't pin down anything else about my feelings for it.

(THAD EDIT: Split from the Coming Soon thread, discussing fan backlash against the Scott Pilgrim movie for not being accurate enough.)

Yeah, if this is a good movie than I really do not give a dang about how accurate it is.

Did the Watchmen really do that bad? I will say that I had zero desire to see that movie again, but I'd thought they'd make a killing with all that hype.

Um from what I've heard you either were going to go see the movie anyway or there was no way unless your friend dragged you.  I went twice  but both times my group was some of the few in the theatre.

I figured it didn't do so well. I like the movie a lot. Hell, I own it on Blu-ray.  But I am pretty sure it did terribly.

It didn't break even in the box office (~$185 mil to ~$200 cost of production+marketing) but might have recouped in DVD sales.  As far as the industry is concerned, though, going under in theaters is a bomb.

I'm sure most fans would have been happier if it were a giant squid instead.

The problem with the watchmen movie is they spent so much effort (I guess) in making Rorschach into the perfect Rorschach (he was), that everything else was meh for it. Also Veidt was so clearly the bad guy, even if you hadn't read it. The best shocker in the book was finding that out.

And the director takes the Wachowski train of thought into movie directing. That is to say, he doesn't think anyone can ever get anything unless the sound track and visuals absolutely beat you over the head with it every time.

I agree with Kabthra. The new ending fit just fine. The squid wouldn't have fit with the whole movie.

I never thought I'd say this, but... the squid made sense.

The squid was a fundamental betrayal of one of the core premises of the book.  It was retarded in every aspect - concept, history, execution, all make no sense unless you're Alan Moore viciously masturbating on a typewriter.  The movie's ending was far far better.

We're getting a little off-topic here, but I always thought the point of the squid was that it was so terribly out of place in the realistic setting.  There's a lot of plausible deniability in terms of "Did the Doc really just set off a bunch of bombs and then basically fuck off?"  On the other hand, if you materialize an immense psychic octopus into the middle of an otherwise relatively sane New York City, people are going to be so shocked, so utterly confused by how coked-up and out there what just happened is that they'll choose to believe any bullshit you feed them about space aliens or whatever just to come to terms with it.  The world's seen Big Damn Explosions.  It's something that humanity has some kind of grasp on, despite its magnitude.  You drop something truly inconceivable on the world, and people won't know what else to do except huddle.

Also, nobody's ever going to implicate Veidt in a conspiracy to create a giant god damned octopus.
