Top 25 Liberal & Conservative Films
« on: February 24, 2009, 01:01:37 PM »

The National Review had their list leaked by the Free Republic two weeks ago. Shock upon shock that someone there posts on Freep. Horror upon horrors.

Quote from: NR
1. The Lives of Others (2007)
2. The Incredibles (2004)
3. Metropolitan (1990)
4. Forrest Gump (1994)
5. 300 (2007)
6. Groundhog Day (1993)
7. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
8. Juno (2007)
9. Blast from the Past (1999)
10. Ghostbusters (1984)
11. Lord of the Rings (2001, 2002, 2003)
12. The Dark Knight (2008)
13. Braveheart (1995)
14. A Simple Plan (1998)
15. Red Dawn (1984)
16. Master and Commander (2003)
17. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005)
18. The Edge (1997)
19. We Were Soldiers (2002)
20. Gattaca (1997)
21. Heartbreak Ridge (1986)
22. Brazil (1985)
23. United 93 (2006)
24. Team American: World Police (2004)
25. Gran Torino (2008)

In response, and after much polling, Daily Kos created their own listing:

Quote from: kos
25. A Few Good Men (1992)
24. The American President (1995)
23. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
22. Do the Right Thing (1989)
21. Platoon (1986)
20. The Color Purple (1985)
19. Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2005)
18. The Killing Fields (1984)
17. Syriana (2005)
16. Brazil (1985)
15. Dead Poets Society (1989)
14. Thank You For Smoking (2005)
13. Wag the Do (1997)
12. Erin Brockovich (2000)
11. Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)
10. Mississippi Burning (1988)
9. Milk (2008)
8. V for Vendetta (2005)
7. Roger and Me (1989)
6. Sicko (2007)
5. Bowling for Columbine (2002)
4. Shawshank Redemption (1994)
3. Goodnight and Goodluck (2005)
2. Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
1. An Inconvenient Truth (2006)

These lists only encompass the past twenty-five years, so no To Kill A Mocking Bird, or Death Wish. Brazil made it onto both lists, yo.

Am I seeing things, or is one list dominated by historical figures, and the other dominated by fantasy figures?

Doing a poll like that at Kos is pretty unbalanced.  You're pretty much asking people who... well, people who actually get off on documentaries, basically.  Not that the NR is much of a control group either, but...

24 [NR]. Team American: World Police (2004)

My only comment is that you can only take Red Dawn off the conservative list when you pry it from their cold, dead hands.

The conversative list has a lot of movies that I like, while the liberal list is fucking dominated by Michael God-Damned Moore.

Like, you get the image that liberals just rent DVDs so they can masturbate to their own viewpoints.

I would've put Alien on the Liberal list for the
Bit where the robot reveals that the company they were working for just wanted the alien all along and the crew was deemed expendable.
Well more like you get the impression that people who answer polls on DailyKos do.

...I just watched that last night.  Freaky.

Or conservatives just declare movies they like to be conservative, no matter how batshit fucking insane the claim may be.

Seriously, Lord of the Rings?  It had fucking anthropomorphic trees laying siege to the evil industrialist who was cutting down their forest.

It seems they're counting any movie where people go to war, or fight, and it's portrayed in a positive or heroic light at all as "Conservative".

Or they think orcs are arabs, I don't know.

I'm personally wondering how they came to the conclusion that Ghostbusters has a political ideology.  Are liberals pro-ghost or something?  Anti-busting?  Do liberals not feel good when busting, but it is intrinsic to the down-home, conservative spirit?

Or perhaps this is just a list of movies conservatives happen to like?

Also, it's not really surprising that conservatives would like Team America.  It's funny, but the satire is entirely aimed at liberals and at the end it attempts to justify America's police actions.  In fact, it's probably the most logical choice out of all of them.

Quote from: Arc on November 17th, 2007
In objective retrospect, Ghostbusters is the ultimate Libertarian film. Intelligent buddies go into business, become successful and popular, fight government intervention, later bailing them out and saving the world with technology that was produced by free enterprise.
