Zara, we really don't hate the custom maps. We would play them. THE SERVER WON'T LET IS DOWNLOAD THEM.

Do you understand the problem now?

Yeah, Custom Maps just don't work with the "kill half the people" thing, since those of us who survive figure we've had our fill anyways.

I didn't have trouble downloading the custom ones when they came up, so...?

Probably the only one downloading because everyone else was disconnected or ragequit.

I'm on half-megabit, so even at best speed I'm out a minute per megabyte of map. If you thought fifteen second respawn was slow, try taking thirty minutes out.

You could try DLing from FPSBANANA. Usually much faster than doing it in-game.

Guys, seriously, it would help if we had a list of the custom maps.  I like custom maps and think they're fun, but if everyone had them in advance they wouldn't kill the momentum of the server.  And everyone who has access to such a list is being a great big wuss about people hating being disconnected because they don't know what map is going to come up.

Alright, guys. All of the current custom maps are hosted on and downloaded from Pyoko. If anyone wants to offer better webspace for hosting them, feel free. Otherwise, you can grab the maps from here at your own convenience.

In the quote here are the maps used by the WFE server as far as I know at the time.  Please add any other maps that I have missed from half-assedly quoting Zara and Cait here as well.

some maps

Downloading these maps is a requisite for maximization of fun.

Once downloaded, place contents of archives in the "Steam\SteamApps\"Your user name"\team fortress 2\tf\maps" folder Except for pl_frontier.  There is a readme file that tells you what to do.  It would behoove you to follow it.

Again, for some reason the TF2 server won't upload the maps automatically to you.  It may be annoying, but at least this bit will do.

Just a heads-up, you may want to disable flash when you're at fpsbanana. It could be a coincidence but my virus scanner picked up a trojan when I was at the site.

Also as a heads up, none of those maps in the Zara-quote are actually on the server yet except for pl_frontier. However, the FPSBanana link might work better for that specific map since it has some quirks.

The issue, of course, is that the maps have been hosted on Pyoko since the third or fourth day of the server's inception. I don't know if it's Pyoko being wonky, or the server somehow not redirecting for some people, or something in TF2 itself that has been causing the occasional issue.

I have actually been okay with downloading the maps in 5-10 minutes about half the time.

Sometimes it does take the "OMG HALF-HOUR" but that forces a much-needed break (unless I just joined) and once I have the map, I never have the same problem again anyway.

The last reason is the biggest reason I don't care too much, but as long as people are getting pissed and quitting over it then it doesn't help game flow.

What really kills me are the times the server just crashes randomly when we're trying a new map. Either no one can join, or I try to join and I just get an error message. However, this never happens with maps that I've already got.

Bizarre. I've been using the site for ages and nothing ever happens. Nor do I ever see any reports about this. I'll watch out though. Could have just been a new ad they were trying that (obvs.) failed?

The first post says something about needing to do something special to install pl_frontier, yet there's no readme in the zip file and it seems I already have it in my maps directory anyway.
