Guild,

When there are only two high-speed Internet providers, and they offer the same level of service -- as is the case in my area and most of the country -- that is not a free market.

You mean to say, Thad, that there are PLACES IN THE WORLD WITH LOWER TECHNOLOGY THAN OTHERS?!

Get. The. Hell. Out.

Talk to me again in 20 years when we're having to disassemble "net neutrality."

Talk to me again in 20 years when we're having to disassemble "net neutrality."

I'd rather talk to you again one year after our previous conversation on free markets and collusion, when you argued that any allegations of oil industry price-fixing were "CONSPIRACY THEORY bullshit" and then proceeded to proclaim that prices would start to drop soon and that the "hypothetical" oligopoly would collapse.  (You also made your requisite accusation of name-calling because I referred to an absurd generalization as an "absurd generalization", and then claimed current oil prices were entirely due to inflation right after two people had already posted figures showing that not to be the case.)

...I can see why you'd set the bar at twenty years this time.  Because when we reexamine things you say after only ONE year, it's just embarrassing for you.

Oh you win Thad. I was wrong about that so I can't be right about this. (sarcastically and with a monocle)

And for the record, I WAS wrong. There's no price-fixing going on at all.

How long has Cable TV been around?  Yeah, you still can't choose between more than one carrier.

I guess nobody wanted one then.

The internet is going to be the single most important thing in our lives soon (in many ways it already is).

Think about it. Television. Phones. Maps. Pizza.

Computer connectivity will be forced to evolve into a massive wireless spiderweb.

There is no correlation between this and oil. Goods are not services.

Everyone I know hates Comcast, yet there are absolutely no other cable options here.
Free market doesn't really work as well when the startup for a business venture is over a billion dollars and doesn't show any chance of profit for years.

It is in my lease contract that I only have 1 ISP choice, even though there is another option in town.  If I want internet or cable, I can only choose the one allowed in my lease agreement.  Which was something I always thought was illegal, or at least should be, but maybe I just don't understand the free market.

It's not illegal for the person who owns your house to tell other ISPs to go fuck themselves. Buy a house and you can get whatever is available to you.

And Catloaf: Wanted was the wrong word. "Was willing to pay for" was what I had in mind.

On getting an expensive company started up: That's life. It's not like Grandpa Joe down the street has a lifelong dream of providing internet service to his neighbors.

Why isn't Shinra posting here?  I would love to see the combination of Guild's argument that there's nothing wrong with only having one option, and Shinra's argument that it's your fault for taking that option.  It would be spectacular.

See, Brentai, now you've gone and spoiled the final boss, Guildenshinra.

And if you're paying attention to Guildenstern's arguments, he is taking the old slogan of "Freedom isn't Free" to a surprisingly literal degree here.

Meh, I'm not strictly pro monopolies, but I am against net neutrality. It's over-regulation.

Well, don't worry, if net neutrality ever gets taken away, nobody will even be able to look up what the term "regulation" means anymore.

What is a paper?

To the Online Reference!

Quote
1 a (1): a felted sheet of usually vegetable fibers laid down on a fine screen from a water suspension (2): a similar sheet of other material (as plastic) b: a piece of paper

How quaint!

I'm reminded of something somebody said when the printing press was invented. His point was that with the over-saturation of printed media in the world mankind was doomed to be misinformed forever. He advocated burning all the books in the world and limiting our choices to a dictionary, a book of philosophy and the Bible.
