Why exactly does that remind you of it?

I can see the connection, but I don't why you think companies being allowed to limit our use of the internet is comparable to the invention of the printing press.

I'm reminded of something somebody said when the printing press was invented. His point was that with the over-saturation of printed media in the world mankind was doomed to be misinformed forever. He advocated burning all the books in the world and limiting our choices to a dictionary, a book of philosophy and the Bible.

...You...ARE aware that that's exactly the side you're taking in this debate...right?

Constantine: It was the irony of his statement contrasted (or not) to yours. In his fear of misinformation he would have doomed us all to three books, none of which are "true."

Thad: No, someone made conjecture about the results of net neutrality's death, which I counterpointed with my own conjecture.

Also I'm role-playing your mom right now.

Okay you've actually made me even more confused.

Okay, I see what the problem is here.

YOU need to keep a paper dictionary on your desk.

There were two men selling hats. One was told he must put chinstraps on his hats so that they did not fly off customer's heads during gusty weather. The second, because he lived over the border, did not have to do this.

Now, many customers liked the chinstraps, while others thought they were unfashionable. Regardless of which was more in style, however, the strapless haberdasher made more money, for his hats frequently blew off and sailed down the river, lost forever. With his extra money the haberdasher invented new kinds of hats... hats that could keep you cool in hot weather and hats with soft linings. The other haberdasher kept selling his chinstrap hats until the market was flooded, and his out-of-style, can't-keep-you-cool-in-the-sun hats doomed him to a life of poverty.

Thankfully the strapless haberdasher was around, and now we have many kinds of interesting hats.

The hats that keep you cool in hot weather still don't have chinstraps, though, so they only do you any good until you lose them... just as they were designed.

The only person who wins is strapless hat guy by virtue of screwing people over.  And I know what you like to believe, Guild, but you are not the strapless hat guy.  You're more like the hopeful apprentice who's ignoring the fact that he's being taken advantage of.

Any correlation you may have drawn between the haberdashers and any persons, alive or dead, was completely your own fabrication.

I was just telling a parable about regulation.

I want to be an art director.

Guild, the free market principal doesn't work when there isn't any fucking competition.

I sometimes wonder why I even read your posts.  All they ever do is make me angry.  At least you make it easy for Thad to be funny.  At your expense.

That also ignores why people wouldn't just start buying the chinstrap ones because they last longer.  But that may be overthinking Guild's ridiculously stupid strawman allegory.

Go green!  Buy hybrid hats!  All the form and functionality of old-fashioned strapless hats combined with sleek new chinstrap technology to make your hats last longer and work more efficiently!

Hybrid hats aren't only good for the environment, they're good for your pocketbook!

(Okay NOW I'm breaking down the allegory.)

Catloaf: I'm going to ignore statements of "I should not do things I shouldn't do because I can't handle them!" And to your first point about monopolies: I don't think that this would lead to a monopoly, so I am not going to change my stance.

Constantine: Style and comfort often trumps strict logic. That's why we aren't all wearing giant nylon sacks and living in underground holes.

Guild is saying:

<Mr ISP> Hello, Big Business! Your internets are more important, and you pay us more money, so here's a bigger pipe!

Everyone else is saying, and this will happen, it has happened, anyone who's ever worked with a souless corporation knows damn well it will happen before #1:
<Mr ISP> Hello, little consumers! I hope you have $200 a month, otherwise you're stuck with the retard internet!

Shinra would say:

Don't like a shitty internet company? Go get another one, fuckface.
There's only one in your area? You're fucking stupid, just move.
You have a job there? You're a retard, quit the job.
You don't have money for internet? Idiot, get a fucking job
etc etc

So wouldn't it follow that:

<Big Business> "Here, little guys, buy our bandwidth. We have the good stuff here.

<Little Guys> "Well, this internet is cheap, but there's ads... meh I can live with that."

<ISPs> "Hey, you can't do that!" *provides cheaper bandwidth*

I dunno if that's accurate, but I'm fairly sure all of this will have been made moot once someone invents (my first point was that net neutrality will prevent the birth of:) a faster, cheaper, wireless, long-distance ISP
