I never understood why any actual female would stay around and watch a bunch of guys play DotA. Totally broke my suspension of disbelief, as short as it was already due to it being a music video.

Dota doesn't need mid-game joining; it needs a ladder to disincentivize disconnecting.

This is the single easiest and best thing Blizzard could do to improve DotA for Starcraft 2. It's also Blizzard's best chance of convincing all the DotAholics to bother switching.

They're obviously bored out of their skulls by what they are watching, and since one of the guys is some kind of popular and sexy music sensation it's clear they have an ulterior motive.

LD has watched me play DotA some before.  She wasn't enthralled, but she did think some of the characters were cute.

The real paradox here is that he didn't become popular until after this video!

I'm still waiting for an RTS that rewards strategic thinking over ADHD click-speed and OCD micromanagement.

I've only ever played DotA at lan parties with my friends, where I can physically turn to my teammate and ask him to help me get through some of the early learning curve.  I like it this way.

I also only play it like twice a year so the learning curve never goes away.

As long as it's real-time it will eventually turn into that.

I've only played it with real-life friends and it was pretty enjoyable.  Although I found well over half the heroes to not be too great.

Maybe he was popular in Sweden beforehand, though.

Or maybe Swedes are just weird.

I always tell Kazz to be the dragon knight or anything remotely animally-cute.  He doesn't usually listen and then I just sit and watch and go "what are you doing now?

I'd just like to say that if you're any good at DotA, early mistakes don't mean anything.  You just have to smooth it over.  I can't count the number of times my score has been thoroughly negative (like 0-6 or 0-10), but with a bit of patience, farming, and persistence, I've ended the game Godlike, or as the deciding factor, or at least a major contributor to the final win.

The trick is, when you find yourself making mistakes, adjust.  If you're Pudge and you can't seem to hook a steak, just make some adjustments.  Take some time off hooking and just farm for a bit.  Don't sit in the woods and throw aimless hooks while your opponents level.  If you're feeling like you're falling behind your lane enemies, and that you'll never catch up, you really have three options: you can kill them yourself with TRICKERY, which is unlikely as you're pretty inexperienced and they'll probably just dupe you; you can call your team to come over for a gank to slow them down or even a lane swap so you can get out of a losing situation before you run out of time.

Anyway, there's nothing for it if you don't like the game.  I personally really like the game and the parts that annoy me are people who don't FEAR THE BAN and so they leave games, and also many of the people are just horrible to be e-close to for the length of a DotA.  But it helps if you talk a lot of shit in-game through all-chat.  Berating players after you kill them might seem like bad form, but you've got to remember, DotA isn't about being nice.  It's about finding out which opponent is the dumbest or most susceptible to e-rage and then trolling them until they come up with some true comedy gold in their inability to form a coherent sentence.

Actually, have you tried Globulation2? It might do the trick.

I don't think the answer is trusting a robot to play the game for you.

I only started DotA a couple months ago and I'm still pretty bad.  However, I still have fun with the game and my complaints have already been mentioned a bunch of times.  I would like to check out League of Legends, hopefully it fixes the most frustrating parts of DotA.

If you suck at the game, play with experienced friends on your team and ask LOTS of questions.  You'll get better much faster than playing any other way.

After playing more with friends both here and elsewhere, I've come around to DotA a bit. My complaints are still the same, but it is fun once you have a very general idea what to do. Early game I'm good to go, but mid to late I get lost and people yell at me for not being where I was supposed to know to be. Oh, and I don't watch the mini-map like a hawk yet.

(But there are still totally imbalanced heroes)
