And IMO the single best Spider-Man story arc ever.

I wonder if Ditko intended that to be a metaphor for objectivism. With great responsibility, indeed.

Well, this particular example would be a poor indicator of that, as it's precisely the self-interested actions that get Peter into trouble; if he hadn't taken the time to take the photos and send them in to the Bugle, his friends and colleagues would have forgiven his running away.

From a broader perspective, though, you raise a very interesting point, but I don't think Ditko was planting subliminal messages that the reader should think of Peter as a chump.  I CAN see how, politically, the altruist angle could have bothered him, particularly when it was used as an explanation for why Jonah hates Spidey so.  It IS an interesting contrast, and probably safe to chalk it up as another of those creative differences with Stan that led to him walking.

Episode 4:
-She's got a great ... personality.
-I like how they handled Brock's brief scene.  He's pissed at Peter, but he recognizes he's gonna get over it at some point.  Give him some time.
-Man, Pete's spider-confidence is working over time with Betty.
-I'm kinda glad they're using Marko as the current punching bag rather than the Shocker.

'Sfunny -- I was just this afternoon, prior to watching yesterday's episode, recommending this toon to my uncle, and when I mentioned how many characters had shown up he asked if Ned had made it on yet.

And did my ears deceive me, or did they change Leeds to the more Asian-sounding Lee?  Because the linguist in me was already noting that Liz's accent does not match a last name like "Allen".

On the minus side of the racial diversity parade, it's a little disappointing to see the only two African-American members of the cast turn out to be related.  Then again, I guess that's a Ditko kind of a thing to say; purportedly he wanted the Green Goblin to turn out to be some random guy nobody had ever heard of rather than make him Harry's dad.

...So did they have one of these today?  Has anyone found a torrent?  I haven't been able to find one; can't tell if it's because it wasn't on, nobody's ripped it yet, or because the title "competition" was too generic for a Google search.

Yep, another solid episode today.  A bit of the typical high school sorta story with Peter that was nonetheless well done (GOOOO HARRY YAY), and Marko finally becomes the Sandman.  I haven't disliked an episode of this show yet.

Thanks Niku!

Yeah, the Harry Osborn-as-Ron Weasley comparisons are pretty hard to avoid.  Nice to see him coming into his own.  Surprised to see Mrs. Osborn for the first time -- and I mean ever.  Obviously the Ron comparison breaks down when we talk about Harry's family life; the visual used to show the distance between his parents wasn't exactly subtle.

Great to see old Otto pop in, too, and interesting to see him used as a gentle, cautious foil to Norman.  Looking forward to seeing him change.

That also means we're a Kraven and a Mysterio short of the Sinister Six.

...Apparently there is no Spider-Man today.  :fail:

Will have to wait until next week.

In the meantime, if my math is right, Doctor Who is showing right now and torrents should probably start popping up within the hour.

When we get TWO eps, hopefully both new.  We're supposed to get the entire first season within 12 weeks, or so I hear.

Just one as it turns out, but it's got some good stuff.  Also, looks like we might be waiting another two weeks for episode seven, according to wiki.  So much for the three months for the season.
I was honestly pretty surprised that Big Man turned out to be Tombstone.  I mean yeah, as far as red herrings go the name Big Man was pretty obvious, but I just sort of assumed they made it so obvious to get people thinking it was too obvious before the eventual Kingpin reveal.  Maybe I should never have read Death Note.

Also we've got tiger jackpot warning.
Was there ever any doubt?

Nah, it was just a matter of when.

Goblin tomorrow.

ToonZone interviews writer Matt Wayne, who also wrote the Luthor/Flash brain switch episode of JLU, which really explains quite a lot.

Last week's was great; really played MJ and Goblin both much better than the movie(s) did.  MJ's the coolest kid in the room, and Goblin's out of his damn mind, and Spidey makes fun of him rather than be frightened by his ridiculous costume.  Hell, we've even got hints of Harry's drug problem, albeit in a Saturday morning cartoon-appropriate form.  Tombstone's observation at the end that Spidey could have done the exact same thing and gotten a paycheck for it is vintage Parker luck.  Tombstone, meanwhile, still feels like he's only there because they couldn't get the rights to Kingpin.  (Which I'm seeing alleged on various messageboards but not from any primary sources.  He WAS on the MTV Spidey series, complete with Michael Clark Duncan as his voice, so it's hard to understand why he'd be off-limits NOW, but if there's one thing I've learned from Bruce Timm's comments on the Bat-embargo of JLU, it's that suits' decisions on which characters are off-limits are rarely based on anything resembling logic.)

Also, I didn't notice his voice change at the time, though I DO recall thinking, a few eps in, "Hey, that's KMR, didn't notice that before."  Didn't notice before because in the first few eps it was Keith David -- another Gargoyles link.

Haven't found today's ep yet.  Anybody have a copy?
