I tried something called the Santa's Little Helper at one of my favorite watering holes the other night.  It was a Belgian Strong.  $8 a glass and they would not allow me to use my $1 off card.  (However, the waiter cheated and applied my $1 off to my girlfriend's drink, which he is not supposed to do.  I more than made up the difference in his tip.)

Worth it!  Strong enough that I didn't need to buy any more beers, but really smooth; my girlfriend (who is a stereotypical girl and likes things like hard lemonade and Hornsby's, and at this place of establishment was drinking a Framboise, which I approve of) took a sip and thought it was pretty good.  She commented that it's less bitter than most of the things I drink, which most beers are as I really do love me some IPA.

I went to the local distributer today and had a guy there show me some of the local favorites in the darker stout / lager variety (and a few ales snuck in, too). I have very little beer positive experience save some Killian's and Murphy's, so I figured this was a good way to start. I'll be posting as I finish them.

Arcadia Ales' Imperial Stout:

Smoky is the first word to come to mind, or maybe foggy. Whatever the term is I'm sure an old Scottish man somewhere can describe it better than me, suffice to say I half-expected smoke to leave my throat after the first big sip.

Tastes a bit like Guinness import with a more hoppy and bitter flavor. Goes down like a light beer but definitely has the hit in your gut that you only get out of the dark stuff.

Hmmm.  Hoppy Guinness sounds pretty great to me; if I ever see it I'll try it out.

I suggest using a pint glass for it. I thought it was just an especially dark bottle but turns out the stuff is just darker than night. Just having it in a glass in your hand would make you 10x more manly.

Anyway I forgot to update the other day.

Sam Adams Boston Ale:

To start I should point out that I've never really liked ales so I may be a bit bias. Overall it was definitely a stronger taste than most domestics but was still disappointingly watery. Any good adjectives I may have had for it are out the window at this point, but I'd say it fell somewhere between Miller Highlife and Heineken.

Oh hey, I've been ignoring this. Nothing worth posting about until last night anyway, though.

Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat:

If you get a drink with "sunset" in the name it is probably intended for girls, and this is no different. I got it because it's from Wisconsin and is apparently Native American and so are James and William. It was tasty I guess, not really too sweet but a bit of an out-of-place citrus taste.

Sam Adams Irish Red:

I don't know why I got another ale. I think because I'm Irish and it adds +5 morale in Mount & Blade I assume I'll like it but I never do. In either case the label says it's "rich and malty" with a "distinctive caramel flavor". It just tasted like water to me. More so than the Boston Ale even.

Sam Adams Black Lager:

This one was amazing. Like, super super amazing. Going up against the Imperial Stout for darkness, this one didn't have the hit of it. Which is good if you want to keep downing 'em but overall made me feel a bit less manly for drinking it. It's definitely thicker than the stout, not quite syrupy but heavy, which gives it major points. I don't have a doubt this is the best Sam Adams has to offer, and is probably one of the best domestic lagers you can get.

Leinenkugel's is not native american. It is from around where we live though and they make some great beer. (not sunset wheat)

Next thing you know you'll tell me not all the members of the Cleavland MLB team are Native American either.

Anyway, last one:

Fort Collin's Brewery Chocolate Stout:

See, I thought this was chocolate in the way a lab was. Apparently it's actually beer with added chocolate flavor. So yeah, that sucked.

Final Rankings:

Imperial Lager
Black Lager
Boston Ale
Sunset Wheat
Irish Red
Chocolate Stout

I got the fucking hiccups from beer from drinking too much beer for the first time ever.

Also, some ratings from my experiences the other night:

Alexander Keith's IPA*

Generic mass-produced lager

Kokanee

Generic mass-produced lager

Corona

Generic mass-produced cerveza

I've also noticed that President's Choice has started mass-producing beer in different flavors.  Has anyone tried yet?

I tried them a few years ago (PC beer is not in fact all that new)... they're so-so at best. Kind of a crappy Sleeman's.

I've recently partaken on a bottle of plum wine, and it wasn't bad. It has a bit of a bite, at first, but it quickly smooths out during the after taste which leaves you wanting more. It's definately on the sweeter side (I dont care for sweets), however, the drinkability is uncanny!

Also, hi, I'm new to the forums - glad to be here etc. etc.

Had some of the local brewery's new red(dish thing).  It was an alright in-style beer, as their beer usually is, but nothing special, and in a style I'm not truly fond of.  Also, who releases a red in fucking August?  WAIT TWO MONTHS, DICKNOSE.

Tried Shock Top and Land Shark at a buddy's place. They were both amazing, and I've decided to officially start a beerventure over the long term. Next in line are Guinness, Fat Tire, and something from some company named "Dogfish Head."

Fat Tire is one of my "go to" beers. For when I am feeling boring, but still want to be kind of pretentious. Thad will tell you stuff like, "Dogfish head has only made 90 Minute IPA with different labels." But you should ignore his bullshit, because he's old and surly and apparently does not love 90 Minute IPA enough.

EDIT:
Guinness calls for a slightly different pour than most beers look it up. Unlike some other beers it is not waiting for a little O2 to round out its flavors. You are pouring your beers into glasses, right?
