MAH SENTRY
« on: March 20, 2009, 09:25:46 PM »

I've been playing Engineer during laggy periods (when the team needs them) lately.

How in the fuck can anybody stand this god-awful class.

I've got like 10 hours of spanking a robot on my account and they are the least fulfilling hours in my life.  Honestly, the most rewarding thing that I've seen as an Engineer was when the enemy team built up ubercharges just to destroy my shit, because it was too much of a problem.  And that barely counts because I built it in one of those spots where sentries ALWAYS GO, so it's not like I was even being creative.

Engineer is one of those things you do because you give a shit about winning, and your team needs you to be Engineer in order to win.  It's a lot like Medic for me in that respect except in the reverse; I grudgingly play Medic even though I always try not to because it feels too much like dealing with peoples' demands, which is what I do during my day hours, and I grudgingly play Engineer even though I always try not to because it's as dull as pretending to be a brick.  Of course, there are always those times I want to completely relax and forget about everything, or when I want to be totally save-the-day awesome, so they're always there waiting for me when I'm in the mood.

It's just those times when I'm not in the mood, and nobody else is stepping to the plate, that bothers me.

Does anybody ever play spy and pretend to be the enemy spy?

Every time I play engineer I give up and switch to a different class after the opposing team destroys my nest for the first time.  I just feel like I can better contribute by blowing up, setting fire to, or just plain bonking the other team than spending several minutes getting a base established just so a demoman can blow it up in 5 seconds.

This is similar to how I play spy.  After the first few discoveries, I just switch to a class I'm better at.

The trick is to have a backup plan for when your shit inevitably goes down.

If your shit doesn't go down, you are playing a damned boring game and should probably switch servers.

Ah, the Burlingame gambit.  Rather than examining the other party's position and outlining the ways in which it differs from your own (paying careful attention to avenues they may not have considered), you simply retort that their abilities are lacking, putting them on the defensive and keeping your own weaknesses off the table.  A brilliant move, sir.  Well played.

One of the good things I found with the engineer class is that always having to return to your gun/exit/dispenser every ten seconds forces you to have a good eye for the spy, although my pack still feels like a human pin cushion..

I've logged away twice the amount of hours as engie as any other class.

Planting teleports behind an enemies' new spawn feels good, man.

For some reason I ended up gravitating towards Engineer (spending about a quarter of my time with it) after spending about fifteen hours on Pyro because:

  • It's really hard to draw a bead on people when your frame rate is something like 12 FPS.  Sentry guns do not give a shit about inconsequential matters like that.
  • I enjoy watching people run through doorways only to die near-instantly in a hail of surprise gunfire after I put a sentry somewhere they weren't expecting.
  • It's pretty obvious when dispensers and teleporters are proving useful.  As opposed to, say, grenade spam.
  • I also enjoy putting teleporters places people weren't expecting, although this is slightly more limited in terms of opportunity.  Sometimes you get people who accuse you of not doing anything, but hey, they're not the ones trying to cap the first point on Steel with three Snipers.

:tldr: I play Engy because I am a sadistic asshole with an old computer in need of validation.

When I play Engineer, I like it because the skills it requires are not reflexes or aiming ability or anything like that, just pretty much strategy. Rare are the circumstances in which I need to be good at moving and shooting in order to accomplish things as an Engineer. It really all just does come down to: Can I get my buildings up in the right place at the right time? Which do I focus on upgrading and repairing? Where do I get my metal from? Can I hit that enemy spy without tipping him off that I've noticed him, or at least scare him off? It's a playstyle that really emphasizes the things I find most interesting about the game.

The purpose of a nest is not to be an impenetrable bulwark against the enemy, but to ensure that it is expensive for them to clear out and impossible for them to ignore. Starting from scratch is a part of the game. But, like Medic (and I assume like Spy, but I wouldn't know) there's a point at which the constant setbacks are just too disheartening to go on, and that's why there are so many classes where you get to shoot things personally. (Which, I suppose, is why Heavy has now overtaken Medic as my most-played class.)

As someone whose hours of engineer play outstrip his hours of play on all other classes COMBINED, I could talk about the engineer joie de vivre, or how it's the only class I can ever rack up long strings of kills with, or echo O Hak's framerate comment.

But all I'll say is that dancing that little redneck victory jig is one of the most gratifying little things in any game ever.

to ohak: I remember playing against you as a demoman on aerospace and after several instances of landing on the roof an destroying your shit, you decided you had enough and placed a very well hidden sentry guarding the roof which served no other purpose but to kill me specifically. The joy you expressed via maniacal laughter was so beautiful it brought a tear to my eye.

I hate engineer, but I love putting sentries in wide open areas.

"Okay, I'm going to sneak around her- FUCK YOU WHY IS THERE A SENTRY HERE!?"

Most of you have seen the kind of shenanigans I get up to as engineer. Surprise sentries, ridiculously forward positions, and the always popular battle engineer. If I'm in a scenario where these things won't work, I just switch off the class.

That is not the first time I have done that, and it definitely won't be the last.

"What, putting sentries somewhere to specifically kill someone or laughing like a lunatic after said kill?"

Yes.  See also: The Ventry.
