oh man, migrants are not just plebs anymore.

Summer of my first year, I recruited a high master metal crafter, a high master bowyer/professional gem cutter, and a competent physician with all of the relevant skills.

Two bugs that I've encountered:

- Craftsdwarf's workshop just didn't work for a season.  The only options it had were "Build unknown material craft/mug/instrument/toy."  For some reason, it fixed after a season change.

- Cave lobsters and turtles don't seem to leave any remains when eaten.

crosspost from /tg/

So I was doing pretty well with my fort. Made it through the first few seasons, had a good amount of immigrants, had a decent stock of beer and plump helmets for the winter, a good farming operation going on with some floodgates bringing water in from one of the underground caves, and some nice exploratory tunnels going downward, in search of magma. I'm in the middle of digging out a room on the lowest level to build forges in, and suddenly I get a string of interrupted messages from my farm room. A pair of cave crocodiles managed to get up one of my exploratory shafts, and were headed up - straight for my main hall and dining area.

I scrambled with the military controls for what felt like 30 minutes trying to figure out how to order my squad to attack the crocodiles. By then, they'd managed to kill three dwarves, one of which was a legendary woodcrafter, and every dog and cat in the fort. Once the dwarves got into battle, they dispatched one quickly, and then spent the next ten minutes throwing the other one up and down the main hall. By the end of the fight all of them were skilled wrestlers, at least.

As soon as the second cave crocodile went down, I get an alert that a pair of Blind Cave Ogres have broken down the doors I built leading to the caves - I send my military down, but not before they kill two civilians who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I sent my military down to take care of them, but unfortunately, only one of them was armed with anything more than a training weapon - the resulting battle didn't go well. They let one ogre by, and he managed to charge through the main hall, smash all the workshops, stumble into the sleeping quarters and went, one by one, from bed to bed, smashing the sleeping dwarves to death. Downstairs, my squad of training axe wielding dwarves are still struggling with the one ogre, when two more rush in with a pack of troglodytes behind them. More civilians in the area die, and two of my six person military are dropped.

Right now, there's one ogre left in my fort, and all but five of my dwarves are dead. The two remaining members of my military are legendary wrestlers, fighters, strikers, axedwarves, and shieldwarves. They're also tantruming.

A salute, Postentranced. If nothing else, you ended in the manliest way possible.

I played around with the Arena mode a bit. It's better than I expected, and has a UI system as bad as I expected.

I'm waiting for all of the following things before I really begin playing fort mode(read as: dump entire days into a fortress):

-Stonesense
-Dwarf Manager/Therapist
-Raws to be figured out so I can make a custom race or two

Although I feel I'm missing out on the "True DF experience" of dealing with a hilariously buggy first release.

Need Arsenal Dwarf
- Have ~40 Dwarves
- Have a Barracks
- Have created several weapons, both training and combat-ready
- Have assigned a military leader.
- Have created a squad that is "Waiting for Combat Training" indefinitely.
No Arsenal Dwarf in the nobles screen.

WHAT DO?

Also why the hell aren't we starting a Bloodline game?

Make a topic and work out how to pass it, draft the interested, etc.

I'm in for one of the first five years.
The answer is that most of the posters are lazy procrastinators and you'll have a dead-ended fort within 4 players.
I couldn't figure out how to make a squad fight some goblins. They wouldn't activate and it seemed like no matter what I did the orders wouldn't take.

I would be up for playing a succession game after a few bug patches are released.

New fortress promptly found an underground cavern. Several dogs were eaten by toads and cave crocs.

THere are horses in the wild however, so I think I'm going to be breeding them soon!

The last two times I was able to create an Arsenel Dwarf, I had a broker, manager, bookkeeper, a full squad, and at least 10 weapons and 10 pieces of armor.

The dwarves standing around in civvies not training thing is a bug, apparently you can fix it by building two barracks in the same room and overlapping them.

As far as equipment goes, you're not completely helpless at this point - You can actually individually select pieces of weak equipment to put on your dwarves. Anything past iron requires an arsenel dwarf though, as far as I can tell.

I haven't made 10 weapons/armor yet, I'll get to that.  Seems kinda a silly hurdle to jump, though.  The soldiers are not civvies, they're geared up as "speardwarves" and what have you.  They just aren't training... at least, I think they aren't?  They aren't dancing around bludgeoning each other, at least.

You might take a look here and see if there's anything you're missing. I haven't read everything there yet, so I wouldn't know myself.

Training weapons are a fucking trap.

You might lose the occasional recruit with real weapons, but you're garaunteed to lose if you run out onto the battle field with a wooden axe. Just wasted the entire day on a fort only to lose to a goblin ambush because all of my military dwarves refused to switch to their proper uniforms.

Yeah, I saw that list.  Thats how I did all the things I managed to do.  Guess it's a bug or something equally annoying.

So, my current fortress was always intended to go down in a terrible way when I broke into the underground circus. I wound up getting waylaid by batmen blow-gunners and spear-fighters, though, and wound up losing most of my dwarves.

Most of my dwarves. Four survived: two miners who fled toward the next digging location and dug their way further down, a soldier who wound up chasing a blow-gunner who'd run off in a random direction, and my expedition leader—whose mutant healing factor kept her from dying when she was lying unconscious, being systematically stabbed by a deranged spear-fighter. I was surprised she held up so well when half my squad had died so quickly; the description reads like something out of 100 Days of Sodom.

I like how happy she is about being stabbed to death repeatedly until her wounds scar over and reopen.

She's quite wolverinelike, in that regard.
