Right, but that's just it - it's only banned on Smogon. Random WiFi and official tournaments don't recognize Smogon rules. I hope I'm just overreacting, but Moody Baton Pass Smeargle backed up by a Steel-type (to block Clear Smog) could be a really scary combination, much worse than Bibarel or Octillery ever could be.

Smogon doesn't ban what's good (arguably), Smogon bans what's completely random. Since officially it's pretty unlikely to have perfect IVs/nature etc anyway, you could argue that the entire game is a showcase in barely constrained RNG. Smogon's just trying to make a real competition out of it.

That said, I think it's overreaction, Moody increases a random stat but also decreases a random stat, albeit only by one stage. It is also perfectly susceptible to all the anti-baton pass measures (phazing with roar/whirlwind, dragon tail, haze, parafusion, entry hazards), in addition to baton-pass being an already slow strategy, this makes that kind of play pretty difficult to pull off. Smeargle is not a very buff pokemon to begin with.

Right, but Smeargle's not going down without a fight either. A combination of Focus Sash, Spore, Protect and Ingrain can guarantee at least a few turns of stalling as well as block most attempts to phaze it out (Protect -> Spore -> Ingrain -> Protect, or Protect -> Ingrain -> Protect -> Spore -> Protect, depending on the Pokémon your opponent has out). If you're lucky and nab a boost to speed or evasion, you could Spore your opponent's counter before they even have a chance to status or attack, at which point it's a cinch to Baton Pass to something like Garchomp or Thundurus, set up a Substitute and sweep unheeded.

On the other hand, when it falls, Smeargle falls hard. Speedy Pokémon or ones with Prankster like Whimsicott will give Smeargle hell while setting up (especially with Encore) and Unaware Quagsire doesn't give two shits about Smeargle's boosts and can just haze away (and might honestly be the #1 anti-Moody Pokémon, now that I think about it). How well you can take advantage of the boosts really depends on the kind you get as well.

On the other, other hand, when Smeargle does get a pass off, things will die. Rolling dice with Moody can get pretty nerve-wracking.

Ah well, Smogon bans are widely accepted, so you're right in that this is all academic anyway. Random WiFi isn't really worth it for the load of bullshit either, if prior experience and word of mouth are any indication.

Doesn't Smogon ban evasion moves? That significantly reduces the potential of a lot of pokemon. They learn Minimize for a reason! Don't take that away from them! Do they think a little chance is going to ruin their fun? And their assumption that you'll be using pokemon with perfect IVs and exactly the Hidden Power type you want also grinds my gears. And what the hell is so great about Stealth Rock anyway it is a really boring move

*knux*

Though is Stealth Rock (or even hazards in general) even that popular anymore? With how offensive and priority-focused the metagame's become, I figured that setting up hazards just meant getting beaten down by an Excadrill or Gorebyss. Also: Rotation is the secret best format and hazards are terrible there.

Hazards are also much weaker now that 3v3 is the default format. I also think it makes Choice items weaker, because switching out costs you more. Rotation is fantastic, not least because of how it makes lots of underappreciated 'ems viable, but I can't shake this feeling like it'll all go downhill once somebody discovers a dominant strategy countered only by itself, and it will be a really tedious, cockblocky one. Something like Perish Song + stall.

What's this about 3v3 being default? Hell no, Singles is still the staple of pokemon. VGC was all about doubles. If you're in a Black game, you can go the whole game without playing a 3v3.

Smogon bans Exclusively Accuracy Reducing moves. Because they didn't want to get into the circumstance of shuckles all at +6 evade and -6 accuracy doing nothing forever. You can still use mud-slap because it has effect other than reducing accuracy/raising evasion.

Stealth Rock is not as popular anymore not because it isn't good, but because there's no Move Tutor in 5th gen that teaches it. It's good because nobody is immune to rock type, so everybody takes at least 1hp of damage, making their Focus Sash useless. Also, Moltres takes 50% damage from it. Spikes and Toxic Spikes are good too, but levitation and flying makes them less universal.

Excadrill is entirely destroyed by Gliscor. Forever. Even with Swords Dance. This is why Excadrill is not in Uber.

Speaking of banned moves, Sky Drop was banned due to its buggy nature in Doubles. I ran into a situation where two Hurricanes knocked one of my pokemon out, then the other one too while it was mid-Fly. The game would not let me swap in pokemon. So let's see what horrific bugs 3v3 and Rotations bring!

3v3 is the default because it's the only Singles format allowed under Flat Rules in WiFi (i.e. all levels balanced to level 50). The only way to play a 6v6 Singles match is to battle under free rules, which in turn means having to raise your entire team up to level 100 manually (which is kind of a huge pain in the ass).
