You can hack any move onto any Pokémon using Pokésav and a flash cart. The benefit to this device is that legit carts can have the event Pokémon with the Cherish Ball.

Or just put it in a Cherish Ball with Pokesav?

You can do that on a flash cart, but you can't edit the save game on a legit cart. You also can't trade a creature in a Cherish Ball.

If I remember, there's also an untradeable ribbon which is required to control certain uncatchable Pokémon, like Mew.

Sure you can.  Pokesav even has a function to export to Action Replay.

The main thing keeping pokesavvy people from having 100% legit event pokes was a little thing called the Secret ID that, in conjunction with the Owner ID, tells if a pokemon will obey you or not

Example: Trainer DAWN, OID 64254, SID 13294. If I encounter another person who named their trainer DAWN, and even has an OID 64254, the SID will prevent confusion.

The SID is, well, not seeable outside of things like Pokesav or special device checker things Nintendo uses at tournaments to make sure "This mew I got is totally the legit event mew guys"

The release of these roms now gives us the true SID of the event pokes, as all of them have unique Original Trainer, OIDs, and SIDs.

Alternately, there were sites with databases of legit rips of every 'mon.

Or you could just go the Lyrai method and use illegal (was it slowking?) movesets in a tournament!

Something you sent out against me in the only real one we had here had a move it couldn't know.  I remember being confused by seeing it and looking it up; I think it was slowking.

My Slowking has Psychic, Trump Card, Nasty Plot, Ice Beam. Three are level-up, one's a TM.

I'm also pretty sure I didn't use Six the Slowking in any battles we did.

Hell, I'm also positive I didn't even order my flash card until well after the tournaments.

JD: You can trade pokemon with that ribbon.  What you're thinking of is that you can't trade them to random strangers over GTS, but you can absolutely trade them to friends and people that you have friend codes for.

Ah. Can you trade Pokémon in Cherish Balls, or am I confusing it with the ribbon?

You are just confused, but yeah, you can trade pokemon in cherish balls.  It is the classic ribbon that keeps you from trading over GTS, but you can still trade classic ribbon'd pokemon to friends that you have friend codes for.

JDigital showed me an interesting thing tonight--apparently on smogon recently and some article in bulbapedia, there is a concept of the Masuda method of obtaining shiny eggs.  Apparently, when you breed a foreign pokemon with one of your pokemon, you are 4x more likely to hatch a shiny baby (so that's something to the tune of 1/2048).  That is very interesting, especially considering then you can get egg moves and stuff like that, though the control of natures is just the same as chaining.  I would very much like to delve into this further.

For some reason I had it in my head that you couldn't trade Cherish Balls. I must have confused it with the Classic Ribbon.

I want to say, "Then there's no advantage to the event ROMs over Pokésav," but if you offered me a choice between a ROM'd pikkyman and a Pokésav'd equivalent, I'd still pick the ROM'd one.

Unrelated discovery today: Breeding Pokémon from different countries increases the chance of shiny offspring fourfold, experts say.
