I did Mystery Gift today and got Pikachu-coloured Pichu. If I evolve it, does it become Pikachu-coloured Pikachu?

I originally planned to only use caught Pokemon throughout the story mode, but then I quickly realized that (at least when you're in Johto) the game doesn't like to give you very useful Pokemon to beat most of the gyms. I traded over a Makuhita and a Sneasel (with the evolution item) early on and they ended up being about 10-15 levels higher than anyone else because Fighting, Dark, and Ice-types are very useful in Johto. As I went through Kanto's gyms, my other Pokemon caught up in levels... except for my poor Feraligatr, who became redundant.

Can't evolve it. But you can get spiky-eared pichu when you take it to Ilex forest and talk to the shrine there.

I'm pretty sure you can evolve the Pikachu-colored Pichu; it's just a shiny that happens to be holding an everstone. The spiky-eared Pichu can not evolve, nor can it be traded.

Only at first.  Later on, it's no contest.

Falkner - Geodude
Bugsy - Geodude and Spearow, Pidgey as well.
Whitney - Trade a drowzee to a guy in the city for a Machop
Morty - Anything with a Psychic move, and definately anything with a dark move (pursuit, bite).  You can get both TM28 (Dig) AND Pinsirs with Moldbreaker (no abilities work in battle against it) at the National Park.
Chuck - Psychics still ruling, and flying type attacks aren't that rare either.  Magnemite can swap for Flaafy if Poliwrath is raping
Jasmine - Graveller handles the Mangemite easy, and Onix is even more destroyed by water since he's swapped Sunny Day for Sandstorm.
Pryce - Piloswine is a bit of a jerk, but the whole gym is made for giving you electric pokemon levels.
Clair - The only real "dick" move, since her pokemon are nearly level 40 and any ice type you caught prior is sitting at around 25.  Lapras gets Ice Beam in the mid 30s, but for everyone else it's likely you're going to need to start Voltorb Flipping for enough points to get Ice Beam.

Typhlosion and Froslass make quite the dastardly duo.

I just beat the Elite Four. I had to resort to incredibly shameful cheesiness to beat Lance, but he's a dirty cheater anyway. Level 49 Dragonite my ass.

I really want to just go fight the Elite Four, but the game won't let me continue until I catch Lugia. And I can't use my Master Ball, because as a kid I used to think it was literally impossible to catch Mewtwo with anything but, so I am reliving that fantasy.

1 hp, asleep. Throw a Heavy Ball. It doesn't even shake. I just shake my head and close the DS.

You do realize that the way random numbers work out, just because it only shakes once doesn't mean it's unlikely to be caught?

Also, you don't have to catch it. You can just kill it and proceed with the plot, and it'll be catchable again later. (I'm pretty sure.)

I'm a little unfamiliar with my formulas.  Aren't Dusk Balls more effective, since they're 4x effective in caves and at night, while Lugia isn't the heaviest pokemon there is?

I don't think night+caves stack for dusk, but I could be wrong. I was able to get Lugia with an ultra at any rate.

Serebii says if you kill it, it will pop up again each time you beat the Elite 4.

Caught my first Mewtwo with a reg Pokeball, after about 80 of them and 50 ultras.

it's 4x for caves or night, so i do not think it stacks at all

but yeah, roger is right. and actually (don't quote me on this my math is probably wrong) a regular ultra ball may work better on it

and the shaking does have something to do with it, but it is tied more to the pokemon's catch rate than how close you are to catching it so i doubt lugia could ever shake more than once unless it was going to be caught iirc

You can evolve that pichu, but not the spiky eared one.

Also, you can kill the Lugia, and he'll appear again after the Elite 4.  Also,
