Generation 5's starters aren't quite as strong as earlier generations'. Black 2 and White 2 give you the same starters as Black and White, too. Considering just how many excellent wild pokemon there are right out of the gate, it's worth dropping the known quantity to free up a slot.

A comparison of the Fire starters. It's not entirely accurate because the movesets of some earlier Pokemon changed in later games, and Charmander's stats changed from Special 50 in RBY to Special Attack 60 / Special Defense 50 in Gold/Silver.

A comparison of the fully-evolved fire starters.

A comparison of all the Gen I and Gen V starters.

If you want to boost your Join Avenue population, it seems people on GTS are doing what they call a Magnemite Loop. How to participate:

Step 1: Catch a Magnemite.
Step 2: Put it on GTS, asking in return for a Magnemite of any level.
Step 3: Execute any trade.
Step 4: Repeat the process with the Magnemite you just received.

Every person you trade with adds to your Join Avenue. There are now 200,000 Magnemites on GTS, which is eight times more than the next most popular pokemon (Ditto). Imagine a chain of Magnemites encircling the globe in peace and harmony.

12 real animals io9 can't believe haven't been made into Pokemon. Included in list: axolotl, duck-billed platypus.

If I'm understanding that properly, it's "12 real animals that you can't convince me aren't real life pokemon"

I'm expending way too much effort trying to get a Pikachu on my Black 2.

You can't catch Pikachu at all in BW/BW2, which isn't a big problem because you can trade one up from DPPt/HGSS. However, the one I want is a Surfing Pikachu with Light Ball - legal in Gen IV, but impossible in BW/BW2.

I spent about 50,000 Pokéwalker steps trying to catch a Pikachu with Surf, only to discover that you can't trade up Pokémon that know HMs. Pikachu can't normally learn Surf, so you can't forget it and re-teach it on the other side.

Wild Pikachu sometimes have the Light Ball, but they can't be caught wild anywhere in BW/BW2, and you can't trade items from earlier generations either. You also can't acquire Light Ball anywhere in BW/BW2.

I don't want to just cheat, because then it won't be authentic. My plan is to take the Surfing Pikachu with Light Ball from my Gen IV cart, remove Surf and Light Ball, trade it up, and use a Pokemon editor tool to give it back Surf and Light Ball.

Or you could just use a Thunderstone on it.

So Pokemon XXY will have new "Mega Evolutions" where pokeymans can evolve for one battle only since Digimon have been dead for what ten years now.

Lucario, for example, can Mega Evolve to Lucarionite. BROUGHT TO YOU BY MOXIE LITE
