So apparantly Archie is going to marry Veronica.

Well, this ties neatly into Friday's little anecdote over in the Shit Days thread.

AFAIK it's a "possible future" story and they're doing one with Betty too.

The first gay character in Archie comics is introduced

Chasing Amy dialogue aside, why couldn't they have introduced this guy a few months ago and just have him come out now?

Oh, Archie did something.  I guess this a big deal for a comic that still has issues with miscegenation.  I'll just continue on with my life of not giving a fuck, though.

What I find more disturbing is that Betty has clearly started publically masturbating in the last panel.

I have remarked before that it's pretty bewildering that Archie comics have made such a drastic shift in political views yet remained incredibly bland and inoffensive throughout. I think it's kind of neat that this is pretty much the only franchise still enjoyed by kids that could get away with adding a gay character without parents getting all up in the creators' collective grill.
I still remember reading a story in an older comic where Jughead went undercover for the school newspaper to infiltrate the punk movement. It was like a Troy MacLure special played straight.
Granted, the publishers themselves are also known for getting increasingly asshattish over the dumbest things. The last thing I remember was the outright ban of all fanfiction.

now the world will never read my epic and interwoven tale in which archie sets up a date with betty and veronica at the same time whoa

Suppose that's one way of looking at it.

I see it more as a sign of mainstream, middle-American acceptance of gay people.  I don't think Archie's taking a big controversial risk here -- indeed, they're adding a token.  The fact that this is news at all means we've still got a ways to go, but the fact that fucking Archie is doing it means we've come a long way already.

A certain kind of gay character, yes. One carefully constructed so that any distinguishing characteristics are boiled out, leaving him bland and inoffensive. It seems kind of sad, being the only gay guy in Riverdale... at least until his love interest, Big Leon the Leather Bear rides in.

well it's not like the black guy ever had a visit from his cousin that lived all his life in harlem, communicates entirely in post-jive and thinks Kanye West is the pinnacle of human civilization

I get the impression that middle America doesn't mind gay characters anymore in their media because they've come to realize that gay people exist. They aren't some tiny minority that can be easily ignored and chalked up to deviance or some kind of obvious and rare mental deformity.

But I think that despite this, a lot of people still see them as wrong and still think that if their young children see them too much then they will catch the gay even if they are heterosexual and that somehow this won't be self fixing.

It really is amazing how progressive Archie's gotten since Richard Goldwater passed away.

I hear it's actually been pretty GOOD, too.

Based solely off the image there, I'll be telling everyone I know that in Archie some dude is marrying his dad.
