No Fat Chicks

Quote
Researchers at the university of Calgary analyzed the content of numerous situation comedies to see how women of differing body size were represented. Heavier women received more hostile comments from men than did thinner women, and these comments evoked more audience laughter. The researchers concluded that sitcoms encourage girls to imitate thinner actors, raising the risk that they will develop eating disorders.

This makes me so angry.  I just read this in my textbook and it makes me want to punch somebody right in the god damn face.  Fucking dick comedy writers.

If stuff like that makes you angry, it's a wonder you're not foaming at the mouth 24/7.

I think the Drew Carey show skewed the results of that by itself.

Did they do that study for men too?  It seems like the overweight father/husband is always the butt of jokes.  I don't think it's fair to say only women are discriminated by body type just because they're the only ones they analyzed.

Yeah, but chunky-assed dudes are almost always portrayed as scoring with incredibly beautiful and intelligent women. Fat women get cross dressers.

Popular entertainiment contains a lot of cheap, juvenile, male wish-fulfillment fantasies?

I..am with DNi on that one--you usually do see fat guys with sexy ladies or whatever.  So when they're the butt of the jokes, it doesn't matter because then they fuck their hot ladies.  And fat chicks on shows just get shafted.  Hardcore.

And it isn't new knowledge to me, I just never really thought about the eating disorder related comment at the end of that quote. That makes me sad.

So you think if a show had a fat female character who fucked a hot guy any fat jokes would be instantly overruled by his penis?

Kinda, yeah.  Because then little girls wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that fatties are the most undesirable.  If there was a fat chick on like, Sex and the City getting with all the men, that'd be great (not that Sex and the City is a sitcom really).

The day that studio hucksters think it's safe to show that on TV, I'll eat my hat.

Ok, apparently the last time I spoke my mind about something it pissed some people off, so I'm gonna' go ahead and shoot for that again.

I could go on a whole separate rant on how it's not just being overweight in the media, but I think I'll stick to this for now. LD, you're saying that someone's self-esteem should be directly related to their hotness or the proximity of hot people. Saying that it's not cool to hate on a fatty unless they have an attractive partner is all kinds retarded. Should their partner be their identity to the world? What if the hot partners makes fun of them too? Will this be my first post to finally derail a thread into Jail? Find out soon!

I'm not saying that it cancels out anything, but it would certainly soften the blow and would add more positive qualities to someone who is impressionable and young.  I was just saying that girls would certainly be able to feel more positive about their weight if they had any fat role models.

Wouldn't it mean more to the impressionable youth to have them dating a fellow fatty that they legitimately love? Or, be happy single? For some reason the feeling of quoting a bad movie fills my body as I say this but, you're not treating the disease, just a symptom.

Are you insinuating that a fatty with a hot guy can't be in love?  Or sure, fine, make her single and happy.  Same difference.  I was just speaking in the context of dating, not the character's self-esteem levels.

I just think if it's all about representation, the fatty getting more jokes at their expense than the hot people, then the representation of if they can be happy without a hot person in their life is just as important.
