Oh, Texas Legislature.  You have a reputation for being batshit insane.  A rightly deserved reputation.  Such as when one of your members proposes that Asian-American voters should change their names so that they are “easier for Americans to deal with.”

The best part is when she complains that learning Chinese would be too hard.

That, and the fact that the Republican defense is "but our redneck consituants agree with her!"

This boils down to "I'm not changing, so you should."

She doesn't need to learn Chinese.  She just needs to fucking god damned shitting recognize a couple of strange-looking fucking shitstain cocksmoker words.

Hadn't they done that anyway, back in the 19th and early 20th century? I seem to recall stories of people getting off the boat and given names like "Smith" and "Jones" because the census guys were too busy to try to spell "Schickelgruber."

Fun fact: Most Brazilian second-generation japanese immigrants have both a Japanese and a Portuguese first name. I have no idea why, since any Brazilian can pronounce japanese words without much hassle.

Split. :)

Love, love, love that she was talking down to a man with a simpler name than her own, and that she'd most likely cry voter fraud if anyone followed her advice.

I think this goes for a lot of Asian immigrants! I think it might be common for them to find foreign names interesting\attractive. Most of the Asian exchange students at my high school had English names.

I'm not a Chinologist but it seems to me that Chinese names in their native language are in fact really boring.  Imagine if everybody here was literally named shit like "Hill", "Heart", "Peace" and so on.  You can't blame them for wanting to obfuscate the meaning of their names with another language; we do it so often here that naming someone an actual English word is considered kinda silly.

There's also the fact that people who don't know about tones in Chinese will invariably fuck up your name and call you something completely different.  That's got to be fucking irritating.  It works both ways, too - I decided long ago if I ever visited Japan I'd use a Japanese name, because there are like five things they can't pronounce right in "Brent".  China is slightly better, but the same goes.

I recall that MightyQuinn went by "Quinn" in China rather than his real name, partly because the Chinese could pronounce this more easily than "Dave".

I've had a few Chinese roommates over the years, and they've all taken Anglo-American names.  It just saves everyone a lot of frustration.

Until the last 20 years or so, Chinese immigration to Toronto was predominantly from Hong Kong, which was of course a British protectorate for 100 years. Most of these folks don't have 'chinese' names, their first names are in fact english ones. The funny thing about it is that HK's english naming conventions seem to be stuck in the period immediately after the territory was 'aquired', so many of them have names like Desmond, Ethel, Stanley, Florence, Macaulay, etc.

A friend in my speech class is Chinese.  His real name is Xi, but when he came to America he picked the name Chandler (after the Friend's character) to fit in.

A math teacher at my college by the name of Xiouxu Han goes by 'Hank'.  His accent is understandable, but you have to know what words to expect.  The class all had to wait for him to write a word on the board every time we went over a new concept.  He would also always tangent off into a rant about cryptography.

I've already made fun of Dr. Wang enough for one lifetime, but suffice to say if you take a calc class from him, be prepared to do a lot of reading.
