Just read through Thad's FF7 uncanny valley thingy and I must say It really thought me a lot about FF7 that I didn't think about before.

I wouldn't call it uncanny valley, though it's a similar principle.  The Rejuvenation Project models are still pretty obviously stylized, they're just a little bit farther to the left on McCloud's realistic-iconic spectrum.  (I guess in the same way you'd say Jim Lee's art is "more realistic" than Jack Kirby's.  Even if Kirby had a much better grasp of anatomy.)

Thanks for the praise, though; the McCloud book is highly recommended for...pretty much everybody.

And part 3 of my series is pretty much done but feels a little rambly and disjointed.  I think I'll probably just post it that way without trying to add any connective tissue, but I might wanna read over it another one or two times before I decide.

Really, that's how you know you're talking about FF7.

(Or Xenogears.)

I have summarized my recent experience spending a year bouncing from job to job in a post titled Tempin' Ain't Easy.

Also I have made very minor tweaks to the site.  Including finally switching the main text to Arial, because there is a reason that pretty much the entire fucking Web uses Arial.  (I kept Generic Serif Font for headers.  Because why not.)

Should probably go through and update the KS page at some point here.

Welp, stuck the tags down at the bottom and put them on some of my old posts.  (Man, I am surprised and disappointed by how much redundant code goes in a WP theme.  I think I got every applicable page but let me know if you find any up at the top anywhere.)

Not sure if I like the way they look down there, but putting them up next to Categories seems a little redundant (and, on tag-heavy posts, eats up a lot of header space).

Going to change a few things around, too; I think "Toons" really should be "Cartoons", and "My Personal Life" never made a fuck of a lot of sense despite the appeal of the "Life/Stream" shorthand.  I guess I could call it "Status Updates" instead, but that's not really what status updates are anymore.

...anybody know a good plugin to prevent WordPress from inserting its own formatting into my posts?

I've got the stupid bullshit like "smart" quotes handled (sort of -- the plugin I've got keeps turning " into &#034; and ' into &#039; in source, because apparently you can't just use apostrophes and quotation marks in HTML, because this is goddamn 1992), but it keeps turning "--" into a dash (even if it's in a goddamn <code> tag), and it sure does like sticking p and br tags all over the fucking place.

I switched to WordPress because I was sick of copying and pasting every single post onto an archive page manually, not because I can't write my own goddamn HTML.

Welp, going to try and see if I can sustain this "regular updates" business again.

Cranking out multiple posts a day and my biggest spike is from the day I linked my FF7 pieces in Parish's comments section. :whoops:

'Sokay.  I'm doing this for me.

If I can keep this rate up, though, you guys might want to subscribe to the feed rather than read all my posts as a giant dump.  No one likes a giant dump.

Speak for yourself :suave:

In all seriousness, I've had you subscribed since you started putting up an RSS feed. Enjoyed your posts, especially the good look at the Before Watchmen/Alan Moore controversy.

Thanks.  Lord knows I've written all that shit down enough times; may as well stick it together in one place in one piece.

Related question: if I read a post through an RSS reader, does it show as traffic on your site? I've always been concerned about that, especially for sites I enjoy that rely on traffic numbers for advertising revenue.

It probably doesn't give all the same details that accessing with a browser does, but it's definitely a query and retrieval.  If it's a local RSS reader then it'll give all the usual stuff about your IP (and therefore region, ISP, etc.); if it's, say, Google's reader, then of course that's all it'll give.  But you'll still know you're getting X number of hits from Google's reader.

Most readers don't show all the ads, either, which is probably why most sites just give you the first paragraph of an article and make you click to read the rest.

I don't have ads and I hate having to open the page in a second browser, so I don't do that.

I wouldn't worry too much about denying demographic information to ad vendors -- I keep ABP and NoScript running myself.  By all means, enable ads on sites that you like, and click on the ones that look interesting, but I don't think the ad servers have the RIGHT to know any more about you than what you volunteer.

(And I only keep a stats page up for the hilarious searches.)

I can't believe I've stuck with this one for three years.

I'll switch it when I find something that tops it.

So far this has come the closest:

Well, boys and girls, how are we enjoying our education on the subject of Frank Zappa?

(Also I apologize for mentioning the Riddler.  I realize that is a very obscure reference.)
