What do you guys think is a real practical solution?

Blood in the streets and quotations from Thomas Jefferson all 'round?

Yes, realistically, i think it might come to that. There is no reasoning with the lunatic rightwing fringe. (As to the lunatic leftwing fringe, i tend to think i'm a reasonable person under most circumstances but you're free to disagree as you like).

Ideally? We beat them at their own game. Not the money game, or the religious pandering game, but the media lockdown game. Subvert or tune out their message, reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine. Force Fox News to devote equal time to liberal viewpoints, or face the wrath of the FCC. Take the reins of the media zeitgeist and completely control the vision of the future for America, because the media is called the "fourth estate" FOR A FUCKING REASON.

What people consume creates reality. The rich are fighting the culture war better than us-- well, no, they can't do worse without not participating, which is what we're doing, but hold that thought -- the rich are winning because they solely determine what people consume, and the left's ridiculously naive belief that people will -- or in fact CAN -- make a distinction between what they see on TV and "reality" does exactly dick-all.

I remember back a couple years ago when that quote from one of the PNAC jerks was going around about the "reality-based community" and eeeeeveryone was laughing about it. It wasn't, and isn't, funny.

When confronted with the information that Obama's tax plan is actually going to help him, the guy practically shuts down.

Reminds me of the daily show interview segment where one voter claimed to not be voting for Obama because he's Muslim, to which the next obvious question was "Well other than the fact that he's not, why aren't you voting for him?"

It was pretty funny.  It's eve funnier when an actual news source does it.

(Colbert showing up on the ticker down there is terribly appropriate.)

To clarify: this isn't a "murcans are stupid" comment. It's just that there IS no difference. If you watch the news, the news is reality. If you read newspapers, the newspapers are reality. We all really do live in our private gardens, and it's a rare person who bothers looking over his high hedge to see what's going on elsewhere on earth.

Shinra, I already said I'm not having that debate. Opening by stating your strong conviction that everybody that doesn't see things your way is stupid doesn't do much to make me think it might be productive.

THIS IS WHAT MEMBERS OF FLAT EARTH SOCIETY REALLY BELIEVE.

Actually the flat earth society is (i am pretty sure??) a Dadaist convention of sorts that tries to get people to rethink their basic assumptions about the world in various ways ("ADVISORY: THIS OBJECT DOES NOT EXIST" stickers on payphones, etc) rather than a social club for people going through life with their heads in the sand, like, say, your average gathering of campus republicans.

Oh, I assumed they actually believed the world is flat, hence the comparison to the idea that fiscal conservatism will do anything but reduce us to a society of paupers and robber-barons. This is what moon-landing deniers actually believe?

Holocaust deniers might be a more apt comparison. We'll see in the next couple months/years.

Then I guess that makes me one of his acolytes.

This irks me. I fucking hate Wal-Mart and do not shop there, ever, for any reason. My friends and I have all had long talks about how it's a horrible place/business practices, etc.

Then I overhear that my friend bought some electronic whatever there, and I'm like "what." and he looks sheepish and says "it was cheaper." Bah.

p.s. don't shop at wal-mart

Wal-mart creates more jobs and better paying jobs than the small businesses it destroys do, and has cheap, relatively high quality merchandise. (the 8 dollar wal-mart brand pants I own are some of the nicest jeans I've ever had. Not joking.) Evil empire or not, I can see why someone would shop at Wal-mart and support wal-mart.

Republicans on the other hand, are only friendly and gracious to 1% of the united states. The overwhelming majority of their fiscal and economic policy is supportive of those making more money than anyone else. Republicans hurt society. I can see why the bible belt votes for them, but the rest of America? People like Bongo? To me, that's just stupidity. People who bought into a very bad lie and refused to look at the facts. I see them the same way I see the guy who wrote the Timecube website.

I am locking this thread at the next mention of Wal-Mart.

Final warning.

You know that whole preachy-ass ironic Marvel Comics meta-message regarding Magneto is based on the fact that his own family was killed by Nazis, right?

And much like his control over metal, that is something he and Norondor have in common.

Actually, I think the next goal for this thread should be to see how many times we can bring it to the brink of lock-armageddon without actually doing so.

EDIT: Either that or we hijack it and take it straight to Cuba.

The next time someone mentions cuba I'm going to seize the reigns of moderatorship from the bourgeois and return them to the proletariat by locking this thread.

Excellent subtle pisstake, Soup, but I don't think it's really bad for me to be morally and politically outraged on behalf of other people that i consider myself to be in the same camp as.

Also, holocaust deniers comment was in regards to the impending national tragedy (?) of the second great depression. I am aware it's insensitive and totally out-of-proportion, but that has never stopped me from being an asshole before and i'll be damned if i stay my hand now.

... Unless that's not what you meant at all. In which case, never you mind.

I was actually just referring to how you hold a "Take-No-Prisoners" approach to your views.  Most of us on her have an understanding that even if they're batshit insane, conservatives have a right to be batshit insane.  Basically, we understand what you're saying we just don't support locking up people because they don't realize a tax plan is good for them.
